When it comes to commitment it doesn’t get more intense than Joaquin Phoenix. Time and time and time again this thespian has proven why he is one of supreme performers of his craft and now he’s ready to take on the world’s greatest ever villain in a dark and twisted new origin story in Joker.

Production has just kicked off for this dark new origin story and director Todd Phillips (The Hangover, War Dogs) is promising something different with this one. Set in Gotham City in the mid 1980s,  Joker will follow the story of a failed comedian Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) who slowly loses himself to madness and in a tragic turn becomes the sinister and psychopathic criminal lord of the underworld that has dominated the world of DC Comics for more than 75 years.

In addition to these first plot samples Phillips has already given us a first look at Phoenix in the role via his Instagram account.

While Phoenix is not scarred up and spattered with garish make-up, green hair and one serious smile just yet, this image does present a portrait of a man who could be considered the loser of life’s losers. Phoenix’s Arthur is just a mess of a human being and before long life is gonna hit him with one hell of a sledge hammer and send him falling down into the insanity pit.

I myself am liking what I ‘m seeing. It’s different, edgy and is setting up something interesting here that we haven’t seen before. While origin film’s have been all the rage and we’ve come to see ordinary men and women become extraordinary heroes we’ve never seen the opposite tale. The story of an ordinary man brought down so low that all that is left is darkness, anger and destruction. And that’s exactly what we’re going to get with Joker.

We’re a long way off from the release of Joker just yet, and we’re still yet to see how Phillips will introduce his Clown Prince of Crime to the world, but you’d better get on the madness train because on October 3, 2019 you’ll have reason to laugh.
