Yep, that’s right, you are reading this correctly, Netflix are moving forward with a live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop.
According to Deadline, the streaming giant has just commissioned a 10-episode series and have hired Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok) to serve as head writer.
Set in the year 2071, Cowboy Bebop follows a rag-tag crew of galactic bounty hunters who are trying to eek out a living in a strange new solar landscape, while also dealing with their own moral and existential problems while aboard their ship the Bebop. The main cast include slick former criminal Spike Spiegel, gruff bounty hunter Jet Black, the seductive femme fatale Faye Valentine, computer genius Edward Wong and Pembroke Welsh Corgi Ein.
The series is a very ambitious move by Netflix and presents a lot of interest into where it might go. While Cowboy Bebop is considered a cult classic by many people and regarded as one of, if not, the great anime of all time, a live-action adaptation could make for something very interesting. If they are to move ahead I think Netflix needs to take the approach that we’ve seen on shows like Preacher, where the source material is used to inspire the world, but you also get a new creative vision and sense of narrative from the story, because carbon copy’s just aren’t that interesting.
For me personally Cowboy Bebop remains one of my all-time favourite series with its awesome jazz-inspired soundtrack, solid melding of Bruce Lee martial arts and epic sci-fi space adventure, film-noir sensibilities and the coolest character around in the form of Spike Spiegel. I’m interested to see where this will go, and we’ll have to look closer at what Netflix has planned down the line.
