Any time we can watch Idris Elba up on screen is a cause for celebration and the talented thespian returns to the small screen in Luther Season Five as DCI John Luther, the intense and haunted homicide detective who always takes things too far in his quest for justice.
When the moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare, John Luther once again confronts the depths of human depravity. As a series of monstrous killings becomes more audacious, Luther and new recruit DS Catherine Halliday are confounded by a tangle of misdirection that seems to protect an unspeakable horror. But as the case brings him closer than ever to the nature of true evil, a reluctant Luther faces the ghosts of his own past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect, and who to sacrifice. Whatever his next move, it will change him forever.
Right off the get go we are thrown straight into the action with Luther Season 5 as series creator Neil Cross keeps the temperature up with plenty of suspense. It’s been a long time since we’ve caught up with Luther and in that time he’s been doing what he does best, seeking justice, but it appears that the last few years have not been too kind to him as he still holds onto the darkness that constantly surrounds him. While Elba has always made for an interesting presence as Luther, the super cop is now living in changing times and his vigilante actions now have to be kept in check as he’s in a rapidly changing police force that is loosing its appetite for Luther’s old school ways.
But a grisly new serial killer appears and soon sends London into chaos, prompting Luther’s darkness to rise to the surface as he is forced into a new game of cat and mouse. However, if you thought that a new serial killer was all that Luther would have to contend with, well, you’d be dead wrong because Cross knows how to keep the tension moving and Luther is soon pulled into a fractured side mission in the form of sinister gangster George Cornelius (Patrick Malahide) who believes Luther is meddling in his affairs and sends him running for answers.
All of this is an exercise in suspense and craft and Luther absolutely delivers here. It’s not enough that Luther has to deal with one new enemy, he’s also got the sins of his past dredging things up now and this constant back and forth really keeps you on the edge of your seat as you try to guess what is going to happen next. As an audience member it’s interesting to watch how Luther deals with these situations and his deductive and smash mouth bruiser style always kick things off. For the first episode of this much awaited series everything really pushes the audience forward and there are plenty of twists along the way that keep you on edge the whole time.
I came into Luther Season Five with no idea of what to expect and I got a damn good jolt the minute the show started to role forward. While I’m hesitant to not reveal to much because of the ever present threat of spoilers I will say that our dark avenging hero will be tested like never before and this series is gonna get a lot more gnarly before it’s all over. So watch it ASAP.
Luther Season Five streams from Monday 18th February from 9.30pm on UKTV.
