We were thrown right into it with Episode 1 of Luther and a dark and terrifying new evil is on the rise and ready to tighten its grip around London, but for DCI John Luther (Idris Elba) an even more shocking revelation has arrived for him.
That revelation is the appearance of serial killer and his one-time conflicted lover Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson) who winds up on his door and drags Luther right back into it. As an audience member the appearance of Alice definitely throws you for a serious turn and I was left wondering how the hell Luther’s dark and twisted soul could actually deal with all of this. While I have to cut it short as to what Alice’s motivations are here because of some rather large spoilers, it definitely throws another spanner into the works for Season Five and our conflicted hero now has another weight above his head to bear.
Then there’s London’s new serial killer problem. While last week’s ending had me in shock, in this episode we get to meet the despicable killer and he’s absolutely vile. During his actions through this episode all I could think was that I really hope Luther beats this guy to death! Some bad guys need an extreme solution and this guy is most definitely one of them…but therein lies another twist to the story, with Luther’s new found doubt with the re-appearance of Alice, will the great detective actually be able to find and defeat this new villain in time?
While Episode 1 got off to a roaring start and really got us racing into this new story, Episode 2 is more about the build-up. Here we’re coming to learn more about our characters and just how their actions will affect the storyline. Part of what’s really driving my enthusiasm for Season Five of Luther is the fact that he’s the old dog in a changing world. While Elba’s Luther was always willing to cross the line in order to find some sense of justice in his work, he’s now in a brand new by-the-book, politically correct police force and this really makes things difficult for him. As audience members we have always liked the idea of the rogue hero whose willing to stand up when he’s supposed to sit down, and here in Season Five of Luther we are seeing this play out and it’s a real conflict driver.
The ground work is playing out here for Luther in Episode 2, but I really feel that Episode 3 is going to make for a really intense watch. Not only is this new killer on the prowl, but Luther’s own demons are falling back in on him once again and this can only lead to plenty of great drama.
Luther Season Five streams on Monday from 9.30pm on UKTV.
