It all comes down to this: Episode 4 of Season Five of Luther. And time is running out for our hero.

Following the explosive conclusion to Episode 3, Episode 4 finds DCI John Luther (Idris Elba) really on the edge as he works to swoop in and take down both George Cornelius (Patrick Malahide) and the sinister Dr. Jeremy Lake (Enzo Cilenti), and this is television that leaves its audience directly on the edge.

There’s no more room for any type of slow burn revelations here. This is action that runs to a clock, and those 57 minutes really lock you in as Luther puts everything he has into bringing the bad guys to justice. While Episode 3 left us with the shocking arrest of Lake’s wife and accomplice Vivien (Hermione Norris) we get to see the rush as Luther moves to stop London’s new serial killer from getting his final fix. And that leads us into a great exploration of Luther’s deductive mind and his pavement-pounding tendencies to race to the scene of the crime.

What we’re really seeing here in this, the final episode of Season Five, is the culmination of Luther’s own psyche laid bare. While he’s always a stickler for the law, his notions for serving it often lead him to stray from the path and after such a long time chasing the scum of London it’s ultimately changed him into something else. And this something else has direct tie-ins to his unhealthy romantic obsession with Ruth Wilson’s Alice Morgan.

It’s in Episode 4 that everything comes to a standstill with Alice and the episode’s closing frames really took my breath away. You won’t see what’s coming with Episode 4 and as a conclusion to a tightly wound season of television it’s a piece of content that will leave you shaking and thinking to yourself: where the hell do we go next?

Luther Season Five has been a great example of how great television should be made and each of its episodes have gone for the jugular. It hasn’t stopped being entertaining for a second and I found myself bracing for thrills at every single moment. Just where Luther goes following Season Five is anyone’s guess, but I feel that the fallout from this chapter will be massive and things are about to get very interesting for DCI John Luther.

Luther Season Five streams on Monday from 9.30pm on UKTV.
