Robert Pattinson to don the cape and cowl for ‘The Batman’
In a brand new development it appears that Robert Pattinson will be taking on the mantle of Bruce Wayne/Batman in Matt Reeves new presentation of the legendary superhero in The Batman.
Variety confirmed Pattinson’s involvement in the project and said that the actor was in final discussions for the part of the Dark Knight.
Reeves new take on Batman has long been in development, first with Ben Affleck, before it was then re-tooled for a younger actor with the focus on portraying a younger Batman and with a heavy emphasis on Batman’s detective skills and a larger film noir style.
Previous to Pattinson’s casting I listed out my top choices for a future Batman with Armie Hammer leading the pack, but alas it appears Hammer will again no longer be portraying the character as Pattinson steps up to take the role.
Pattinson’s casting is sure to come as a major shock to many film fans, and while he was certainly not on my list as a prospective Batman I am intrigued by the casting choice. Since the end of the Twilight saga Pattinson has moved very quickly to distance himself from the world of teenage romance and vampire angst and has taken on a variety of moody and intense independent film projects that have really tested his skills as an actor and resulted in some genuinely intriguing performances from the actor with his list of credits including Cosmopolis, The Rover, Life, The Lost City of Z and Good Time.
As this is a developing situation I’d like to learn more about just what Reeves’ The Batman will actually be about, but it’s intriguing to see that he’s gravitated towards Pattinson for his Bruce Wayne/Batman, while Pattinson has the acting chops to pull off a very determined and haunted Bruce Wayne, he’ll certainly need to hit the gym hard to pack on the required muscle mass to be able to be intimidating as Batman.
Right now it’s a real wait and see about where we are heading with The Batman, but I’m definitely interested to see more.
The Batman will be released in cinemas on June 24, 2021.
