Hollywood visionary Steven Spielberg has returned behind the camera and the master filmmaker is ready to bring audiences something very special with a brand new adaptation of the classic musical West Side Story.
This large scale musical production will be a breathtaking vision to behold, and we now have our first look at principle cast as star crossed lovers Tony (Ansel Elgort) and Maria (Rachel Zegler) are caught up amidst the street warfare of rival gangs The Jets and The Sharks.
The magnificent image captures a wide angle of just how large the film will be and focuses in on performers Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler who are portraying star crossed lovers Tony and Maria in this lavish big screen production.
The image made it’s way online courtesy of Variety and it’s a striking sight of what lies ahead as Speilberg adapts the classic musical, which was first filmed in 1961 starring Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer and which which was inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and written by Arthur Laurents, with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins.
For his direction, Spielberg’s West Side Story will be informed by the 2009 revival of the play and he’s re-teamed with notable collaborator and Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner (Munich) to bring the film to life.
While we’re a long way from seeing the film, it’s a great first taste and I myself am very excited for what awaits in West Side Story when it arrives in cinemas in 2020.
