Crime films always make for a fun time at the movies, and audiences will be in for a very slick time with The Kitchen, which adapts the cult Vertigo comic book of the same name, and follows three women who make a dangerous play for power in 1970s New York.

Here’s the official synopsis:

The Kitchen stars Oscar nominee Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss as three 1978 Hell’s Kitchen housewives whose mobster husbands are sent to prison by the FBI. Left with little but a sharp axe to grind, the ladies take the Irish mafia’s matters into their own hands—proving unexpectedly adept at everything from running the rackets to taking out the competition…literally.

Directed by Andrea Berloff, The Kitchen looks like a really fun and gritty ride through the mean streets of Hells Kitchen New York in 1978, and it promises to be a crime film with a twist. Stars Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss as housewives turned criminals Kathy Brennan, Ruby O’Carroll and Claire Walsh who get mixed up in the violence of an ongoing turf war within the Irish Mob.

The atmosphere of The Kitchen is spot on and Berloff and her team really nail down the period perfect look of the film’s 1970s setting. With a jamming rock n’roll soundtrack, all kinds of flared style and a good helping of New York grit and grime, this film should really appeal to fans of classic gangster films such as Mean Streets or Goodfellas, and it’s action will definitely get your heart racing.

Get ready for a rock n’roll time when The Kitchen arrives in cinemas on August 29.
