When it comes to horror films, they don’t get more genre defining than The Shining.
Stanley Kubrick’s classic work of horror is far and away my favourite horror film of all time, and now director Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game) is ready to take audiences back to the terror of the Overlook Hotel in Doctor Sleep….and this film promises to be filmed to the brim with dread.
A new featurette takes audiences inside the nightmares that await….and you’ll definitely be in for a haunting here:
Taking audiences behind-the-scenes of Doctor Sleep, this new featurette give us a good overview of what audiences can expect from the now adult Dan Torrence (Ewan McGregor), a burnt out loser plagued by guilt, despair and serious substance issues and whom cannot get over the events that occurred in his childhood.
Now years later he tries to turn his life around, but opening himself back up to the power of the shining leads him back into a battle with the darkness.
“I always wondered what happened to Danny when he grew up and I felt that I had a story to tell,” said author Stephen King. “One of the things I wanted to see was a man at the end of his road. You can’t really recover until you’ve finally reached your bottom, and I wanted to see that in Dan on the screen.”
Of the characters journey, actor Ewan McGregor who stars as Dan Torrence said “Dan Torrence’s philosophy early on in the story is not to use the shining, he’s drunk to suppress the horrible visitations of the spirits from the Overlook Hotel.”
“Dan’s worst fear, the worst thing he could imagine, is for him to come back to the hotel.” said McGregor. And that’s exactly where he’s going in this creepy film.
Of the connection to both the horrors of Kubrick’s original film, and the source material, King had plenty of complements to give to director Mike Flanagan, and the author seems genuinely pleased at the work that has been created here in Doctor Sleep.
“Mike’s movie stands on its own, but it’s also a terrific sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s film,” said King.
Here’s the full synopsis for Doctor Sleep:
Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance (Ewan McGregor) has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the ‘shine.’ Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality. Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra’s innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before—at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past.
If you’re searching for a piece of cinema that will truly terrify you then you’ll definitely find it in Doctor Sleep which will haunt cinemas on November 7.
