Things are moving fast for Matt Reeves’ The Batman. With the now confirmed casting of Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman and new castings including Paul Dano as The Riddler and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon this movie is moving quickly as we head into the beginning of its 2020 shoot.
Reeves is steam rolling fast here, and The Hollywood Reporter has now confirmed that further casting is underway and that Colin Farrel is in talks to take on the role of the villainous Penguin, while Andy Serkis is favoured as Reeves choice for Batman’s loyal ally Alfred Pennyworth.
These two new surprise castings sent the internet into a frenzy, especially with the surprise of seeing Farrell linked to the role of The Penguin. While he may have made a name for himself as Hollywood’s hunky bad boy in the early 2000s, Farrell’s recent works have really elevated his dramatic range with intriguing projects that have included The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Beguiled and Widows and I think he’d make an intriguing Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin.
In terms of what I’d like to see here with a Colin Farrell Penguin, I think it’d be fun to sort of see him as this WASP-like freak, sort of the bad seed of an East Coast aristocratic family who found an easier way to wealth and power through the criminal underworld. It’d be cool to see him as this kind of dangerous gangland boss, like a twisted Don Corleone with his own messed up kinks.
As to what a Farrell Penguin could look like, we were treated to a render of the actor courtesy of digital artist BossLogic and this could be really cool to see take shape.

Joining Farrell in talks for The Batman is Andy Serkis whom Reeves wants in the role of Alfred Pennyworth. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Serkis is indeed up for the role, and considering that he already has a good working relationship with Reeves, this maybe could just work out. Although it’ll be interesting to see how this is juggled with Serkis’ new role as the director Venom 2.
In relation to Serkis in the role of Alfred, instead of say The Penguin, which would be the more natural character for the actor, I’d prefer to see him more as Alfred and have him be kept as this semi-Cockney former SAS type, who has been a key part to making sure that Bruce Wayne can survive in life. It’d be fun to see Serkis as a really gruff up Alfred, almost this pseudo-James Bond type of character. Audiences would surely have a lot of fun seeing Serkis go to work as Alfred and I really hope we get to see this casting realised.
Like his work on Farrell’s Penguin, BossLogic also offered up a render of Serkis as Alfred and damn does he look gnarly.

The Batman is easily my most anticipated film of 2021 and it’s really exciting to see it all begin to take shape. Along with new casting news, we’ve also seen details of Robert Pattinson undertaking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practice, and his training will likely be ramping up quickly to co-inside with the film’s 2020 shoot. There’s so much to be intrigued about this movie and I can’t wait to learn more.
The Batman will arrive in cinemas on June 24, 2021.
