Episode One of The Mandalorian completely pulled me into its narrative and its shocking twist at the end of the episode promised plenty of surprises ahead.
Episode Two, ‘The Child’ delivered on those surprises and you again offered up another amazing viewing experience.
Following The Mandalorian as he attempts to make his way back to his ship and get off this barren planet, we are slowly introduced to the aforementioned child, a completely cute Baby Yoda/Not Baby Yoda creature from the same species and for whom being aged 50 years old is still very much an infant. This Baby Yoda/Not Baby Yoda certainly puts a spell on you, and it was a lot of fun to see the Mandalorian interact with the creature and his own sense of heroic duty come out as he has to care for the infant.
Alongside this makeshift ‘parent-child’ interaction we also got to see more of the Mandalorian’s extensive combat abilities, including his use of a sort of mash-up of hand-to-hand/edged weapon combat skills. Star Pedro Pascal really gets physical with the role and it’s a lot of fun to see him bring out his character’s natural fighting abilities.
This second episode of The Mandalorian also brought us back to classic Star Wars characters, such as the diminutive Jawa’s who the Mandalorian has a run-in with and which sets him off on a dangerous new task. This task, along with being an immense and explosive action scene, also served the narrative and the series with considerable depth as Baby Yoda showed off an impressive control of the force, and this moment certainly took my breath away.
‘The Child’ was a damn impressive piece of Star Wars action and is showcasing why The Mandalorian is shaping up to be 2019’s most interesting piece of television.
