2020 is fast approaching and as one of next year’s biggest blockbusters Disney’s Mulan is shaping up to be a sweeping epic that will have be seen on the big screen.
A brand new trailer has just been released, following its first teaser, and this one really showcases the spectacle and size of this mighty film. Check it out below:
Here’s the official synopsis:
When the Emperor of China (Jet Li) issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Chinese Army to defend the country from Huns, Hua Mulan (Liu Yifei), the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. She is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. Disguised as a man by the name of Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her innermost strength and embrace her true potential.
New Zealand born director Niki Caro (Whale Rider, Cold Mountain) has been tasked with bringing this monumental story to life and she balances both a strong sense of action with a gripping emotional story of family, honour and love.
Caro really brings to life the powerful nature of the story and also explores a broad range of themes such as loyalty, destiny and rebirth, as exemplified through the strong thematic presence of the Phoenix in Chinese mythology.
Star Liu Yifei is a perfect casting in the role of Hua Mulan and she balances a beautiful grace with an ability to snap into action at any moment. While audiences were treated to her impressive martial arts skills in the first teaser, here in this new trailer audiences really get to see her considerable dramatic depth as an actress and she really holds the centre of the screen with her performance.
This trailer also gives us our first look at the film’s primary villain as well, Xian Lang, a powerful witch who serves as the film’s chief antagonist and who is portrayed by noted Chinese actress Gong Li. Seeing the interaction between Yifei and Li makes for exciting drama, and audiences will get a real kick out of the action that unfolds from here.
When it comes to the shooting style of the film, Mulan is also shaping up to be one of the most beautifully shot films of 2020 thanks to the lens of cinematographer Mandy Walker who has captured the film’s beautiful, array of crisp hues and really brings the audience into the depth of the picture.
Get ready for a bold adventure when Mulan arrives in cinemas next year in March 26, 2020.
