Director Rian Johnson’s Knives Out was a massive success taking in over $299 million dollars at the global box office and introducing audiences to Daniel Craig’s southern gentleman detective Benoit Blanc in a very interesting and eclectic mystery movie.
There has been talk of a sequel, and now we can confirm that Johnson is indeed moving forward on it, and that it is now officially in pre-production.
While there are few details about the project, Johnson has talked about how he’d like to start filming sometime next year, and that he is moving to lock down Daniel Craig to again return as Blanc. Johnson also stated that the Knives Out sequel will stay true to it’s Agatha Christie inspiration and will likely take place with Blanc investigating a brand new mystery involving a totally new cast of characters.
Johnson discussed the sequel recently on Sirius XM’s The Jess Cagale Show and of the sequel said “ever since we started working on this I was like look if we can keep this going, the same way Agatha Christie wrote a bunch of Poirot novels, I’m gonna do that with Blanc and keep making more mysteries. Y’know whole new cast, whole new location, whole new mystery. Y’know it’s just another Benoit Blanc mystery, and it seems like there’s so many things you could do with it.”
In the same interview, Johnson also talked about looking for new ways to use genre with Benoit Blanc, along with exploring different themes with his Blanc storytelling and it looks like we’ll be in for something very different with the Knives Out sequel.
It’s great to know that we’ll be seeing more originality from the likes of Rian Johnson and I’m excited to see where this goes from here.
