We could all do with a bit of escapism right now, and if you’re wanting to leave the world behind and jump into a light-hearted adventure of times gone past, with a solid mix of quirky action, dazzling fashions and old fashioned romance then Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears makes for an absolute perfect watch.

After freeing a young Bedouin girl from her unjust imprisonment in Jerusalem, Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis) begins to unravel a decades-old mystery concerning priceless emeralds, ancient curses and the truth behind the suspicious disappearance of Shirin’s forgotten tribe.

After a long absence, Australian actress Essie Davis makes a beloved return to the glamorous character of Phyrne Fisher, and it’s cause for considerable excitement. It’s clear from the outset that the character of Phyrne Fisher is close to Davis’ heart, and she revels in the charm that she once again gets to inhabit as the intrepid sleuth. What’s fun about Davies performance as Ms Fisher is that the character is a complete and utter outlier. For the film’s 1929 time setting she’s an independent woman who places herself in immediate danger all for a higher cause, and her friends, companions and even enemies don’t know what to make of her….which makes all of it that much more exciting. Another part of the uniqueness of Essie Davis’ return as a Miss Fisher is that she is a pure Australian character, and her Aussie-ness shines out in the part and is a big part of what makes her so charming, In typical Aussie fashion she’s not afraid to speak her mind, or act boldly and this makes the character, and thus the story, that much more interesting.

Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears is a movie that will very much appeal to fans of the original Miss Fisher Mysteries television show, and devoted fans are in for a treat with this one. Davis’ unique quirks shine out as Phryne Fisher and there’s plenty of mystery, drama, and comedy to keep audiences engaged. One note I would make is that new inductees to the story of Miss Fisher should take the time to look into the television show and try to familiarize themselves to help better understand Miss Fisher and her supporting characters as this will make the story more impactful on them as viewers.

One excellent part about this movie comes in the form of its narrative structure, and the intriguing mystery that finds Phryne Fisher swept around the world in a whirlwind chase that includes a range of diverse locations including Egypt, London and Palestine as she races to solve a dangerous and deadly conspiracy. All of the actions of this movie build to a very unique conclusion, and trust me when I say that you won’t see the end coming, or whom the perpetrator is! Its twists like this that keep things interesting in Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears.

For those wanting a fun little romp through an exotic land mixed with high-adventure and a dash of fabulous fashions and style, Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears makes for an enjoyable watch. For new viewers, it’s a great introduction to the adventurous life of Phryne Fisher, while established fans will find a lot of joy with the long-awaited movie.
