It’s without-a-doubt that my most anticipated film of 2021 is Matt Reeves The Batman, and yes that does include with all the juggling that has gone on thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but the thought of a new Batman film really intrigues me and I’m excited to see what Reeves and his cast and crew come up with here.

One of the most important cast members to The Batman is Reeves’ longtime collaborator Andy Serkis who has joined the film as Alfred Pennyworth, the long-time guardian and assistant to Bruce Wayne, and who helps facilitate his journey into becoming Batman.

While production on The Batman may currently be on indefinite hiatus, Serkis recently opened up about the film and what fans can expect from it. In a recent interview with LAD Bible, Serkis talked about the film and when asked about whether fans could expect a “darker, broodier” Batman film, the actor replied, “I would say that’s not far from the truth.”

Serkis also talked about how this film will be very much centered on the relationship that is shared between Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne and Serkis’ performance as Alfred. “[The Batman] is very much about the emotional connection between Alfred and Bruce. That’s really at the center of it. And it is a really exquisite script that Matt has written.”

Serkis also drew a comparison to the works of Shakespeare and The Batman in relation to the film’s characters and the interpretations that other actors give to them.

“[Michael Caine] was fantastic,” Serkis said, when asked how he intended to follow those who came before him. “His Alfred was legendary, I couldn’t even begin to go there, really. You find it for yourself. It’s like playing these iconic roles in Shakespeare, you go back, you revisit them and you have to make it your own, and see what it is about the character that connects with you and your personal venn diagram.”

Reeves has an incredible cast lined up for The Batman, that in addition to Pattinson and Serkis stars Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin.

Reeves has also talked about the film being influenced by films of the 1970s such as Chinatown, and that his film will carry a Hitchockian feel to it, be noir-driven and focus in on Batman’s detective elements.

The Batman is set to arrive in theaters on October 1, 2021.
