When it comes to comic book craziness one director stands above all else and that’s James Gunn. This comic book cinema auteur is set to shake the DCEU with an all-new take on The Suicide Squad and thanks to DC FanDome’s live event we now have our first look into it.

James Gunn took to Zoom answering fan questions and confirmed that his approach to the sequel is very much in keeping with the tone of the John Ostrander Suicide Comic Books of the late 1970s, and that he’s approached the film in the guise of imagining himself as Ostrander returning to pick up his run on the characters in this movie more than 30 years later.

Alongside talking about his approach to the film, Gunn also announced the film’s cast in a kick-ass video:

Cast and characters confirmed for The Suicide Squad include

Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Colonel Rick Flag, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, David Dastmalchian as Polka Dot Man Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Steve Agee as King Shark, Mayling Ng as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as Thinker, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and John Cena as Peacemaker.

It’s an EPICALLY cool roster and there’s plenty of fun lining up for this one with a cast of this magnitude and a story that will undoubtedly be this crazy!!!

Alongside a colourful Q&A with the cast, Gunn also debuted a special behind-the-scenes look at the film, which gives insight into it’s scale and scope and offered fans an up close and personal look at the assembled characters.

Check it out below:

This new behind-the-scenes footage highlights a film that is mixing in the four colour fun of the comic book page withe grittiness of classic 1970s and 1980s action films for a cinematic experience that will definitely kick audiences in the teeth, and which will give them something that is wildly original and spontaneous.

The Suicide Squad will arrive in cinemas on August 6, 2021.
