The ‘Justice League’ sequels that could have been

Zack Snyder’s Justice League has taken the world by storm, and audiences were treated to an incredible piece of cinema that truly captured the essence of these iconic characters, and this 4-hour epic was an amazing piece of cinema that audiences have devoured, and with good measure.

Following the success of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, much speculation has arisen around what his extended vision for his version of the DCEU, which fans have labelled the SnyderVerse, would have been and Snyder has teased out further ideas about what would have occurred in Justice League 2 and Justice League 3.

While Justice League 2 would have found Darkseif turning Earth into a literal Hellscape and ensnaring Superman into his control through use of the Anti-Life Equation, which was teased in the extended ‘Knightmare’ sequence of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Snyder also said that he would have made Jared Leto’s Joker a major part of the film, and that he would have actually shown Nightwing’s death at the hands of Joker in the film and that it was actually Dick Grayson who was killed by the Joker in this instance of the film, not Jason Todd.

Snyder also addressed rampant rumours that were developed several years ago that he was closely looking at Adam Driver to appear as Dick Grayson/Nightwing in the film. But the filmmaker quickly dispelled these. “I did talk to Adam Driver about a role, but it wasn’t Nightwing,” said Snyder.

Of the proposed Justice League 3, Snyder said, “I had just assumed that the final movie was going to be very much a Superman movie. Like the final chapter [Justice League 3] was going to be a large percentage of Superman to just bookend the whole thing. Because if Batman died, it would have very much fallen on Superman to be the de facto leader. By the way, at that point, Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) would have been made queen of the Themyscira and she would be leading the warriors of Themyscira into battle against Darkseid herself. And Arthur (Jason Momoa’s Aquaman) would be leading the armies of Atlantians.”

“And Superman basically is going to be the head of the Justice League and the Armies of Men. And so Superman would have gone from this kind of berserker Superman to a benevolent Superman.”

From the sound of it, it was clear that Snyder was very much approaching Justice League 3 as almost a sequel to the epic Man of Steel, which also happens to be my favourite film of 2013, and he opened up further about why he wanted to concentrate on Superman in the proposed third Justice League movie saying, “Superman has the hugest arc of everybody because he goes from like the main villain to like the main hero. And that struck me as just really cool and fun and like a really interesting trajectory for him. Because I think traditionally, Superman is one of those characters that people don’t see as changing a lot. You know what I mean? He’s kind of a rock that everyone props against and I just thought, how cool would it be to make our Superman the character that goes on the most incredible journey.”

While Zack Snyder’s Justice League has been phenomenally successful, Snyder, alongside Warner Bros CEO Ann Sarnoff, have firmly confirmed that they will not be going ahead with any future Justice League projects, or other pre-planned DCEU films from the SnyderVerse, such as Ben Affleck’s cancelled Batman movie (although let’s be honest that one would be amazing to see come to life).

Although it is a shame that we won’t get to see more of the Justice League or the SnyderVerse, HBO MAX has offered fans a unique look into the making of the film, and Snyder’s perspective in re-visiting this story and bringing it back to life.
