Here’s the official synopsis:
Bill Baker (Matt Damon), an oil worker in Stillwater, Oklahoma, learns that his estranged daughter Allison (Abigail Breslin), while studying for a year in Marseille, has been arrested pending trial and charged with murdering her lesbian girlfriend. He travels there to visit her in prison and discovers that she has all but exhausted her legal options. He moves permanently to France and struggles to clear her name, contending with the language barrier, cultural differences, and a complex and unfamiliar legal system based on the 1994 Code Pénal. He is aided by a French woman, Virginie (Camille Cottin), and her 8-year-old daughter. As the pressure mounts, he must decide just how far he’s willing to go.
Damon dives headfirst into this heavy role, which finds him as everyman character Bill Baker, an oil worker who is searching for a desperate way to clear his daughter Allison’s name from a crime she did not commit. With time running and nowhere to turn to, Baker is ready to do anything and everything at his disposal to clear his daughter’s name and this film is sure to be a tense watch for audiences.
Stillwater is set to arrive in cinemas on July 29.
