Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is taking the world by storm, not only has it recently had its world premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival, but those lucky enough o have already have seen it have already labelled the film as a masterpiece, and fans around the world are salivating for their chance to see the film up on the big screen.

Now in a special presentation, Villeneuve has offered a new insight into the film with an exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette that takes audiences inside the political complexities and loyalties of the Landsraad. Check it out below:

The featurette covers many of the major characters of the film. It dives into the inner workings of House Atreides, House Harkonnen and the Fremen, the indigenous inhabitants of the planet Arrakis. And the information that we get to gleam here is just glorious.

The featurette focuses on a larger list of characters beginning with Oscar Isaac’s Duke Leto Atreides, “House Atreides stands as a beacon, where every other house in that galaxy is in reference to that, either as enemies or as friends. He wants to make sure not only that his people survive, but that his son is the kind of leader he thinks he should be,” said Isaac.

The film’s central performer Timothée Chalamet also gives an insight into the central character of Paul Atreides saying, “Paul Atreides is the son of Duke Leto and Lady Jessica. And my initial conversation with Denis was simply begging him to be able to take part in the film.” said Chalamet. Chalamet also gives his own insights into the central characters of Gurney Halleck and Duncan Idaho, two definitive men of action who act as mentors to the young Paul. “Gurney Halleck and Duncan Idaho, they feel like big brothers. They rib him, especially Jason.”

“He’s the protector of the Atreides,” says Jason Momoa who portrays the extraordinary swordsman and warrior Duncan Idaho. “He’s definitely the head knight who watches over the family. And that’s his sworn duty that any honourable knight or soldier does. I mean that’s his family, that’s what he bleeds for.”

Speaking on the character of Gurney Halleck, who is portrayed by Josh Brolin in the film, Denis Villeneuve says, “Gurney Halleck is a combat trainer, he’s a warrior.” Brolin expands on Villeneuve’s description saying “He’s a very strict, but fun, visceral, paternal, maternal [figure]. He’s all those things to Paul.”

Audiences are also introduced to the incredible character of Lady Jessica, who is portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson within the film. The concubine wife to Duke Leto, Lady Jessica is also a member of the mysterious Sisterhood of the Bene Gesserit and she has incredible significance within the story of Dune. “This group of women who carries enormous strength and power. They are bodyguards, they are fighters. They can read people. And this is what Jessica is having to deal with [along with] dealing with being a mother, a lover and as Bene Gesserit.”

Alongside a deep look into the make-up of House Atreides, audiences also get a brand new look at the ferocious House Harkonnen and there’s plenty to be excited about with these core villains. Showcasing a new look at the sadistic Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård), the savage Glossu Rabban aka ‘Beast’ Rabban (Dave Bautista) and cunning and twisted mentat Piter De Vries (David Dastmalchian). Audiences get a clear look into these ultimate villains and there’s plenty to be freaked out by the Harkonnen’s.

“He just shows up and his shadow looms throughout the film. He’s a cause of many people’s death,” says Stellen Skarsgard who gives an utterly terrifying performance as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. Dave Bautista who stars as ‘Beast’ Rabban, the Baron’s savage nephew, and adds in his description of the Baron, ‘he feeds off of fear, he feeds off of pain. He’s a vicious, sadistic person.”

The Fremen of Arrakis also play a very big part in the new featurette and we gain new insights into Javier Barem’s Stilgar, Sharon Duncan-Brewster’s Dr. Liet-Kynes and Zendaya’s Chani, the main love interest to Paul and a symbol of his burgeoning psychic powers and mind-altering state of consciousness.

Speaking on her role of Chani, Zendaya said, “Chani is native to Arrakis, she’s used to this hostility between her people and the people who are trying to take from her land. She’s a fighter at the end of the day.”

A cast of this magnitude and significance makes for an extraordinary sight on screen and audiences will be in for a one epic cinematic experience thanks to the strength of this group of collective performers in Dune.

Dune will arrive IN CINEMAS on October 21.
