Sir Ridley Scott set to start production on Napoleonic tale ‘Kitbag’
2022 has already gotten off to a roaring start and there are many amazing film productions that cinema fans are sure to get excited about. One of the most dramatic and big-scaled productions set to get underway this January is Sir Ridley Scott’s historical Napoleonic epic Kitbag, which will chronicle the rise to power of Napoleon Bonaparte and the life that he shared with his one true love Joséphine.
Kitbag is set to start filming this month, and while Scott is keeping rather low-key on the project he has described the production as a ‘monster’, which will feature more than 150 speaking parts, as well as six-major battle scenes.
Commenting on Kitbag, Scott recently said “I came in saying the sell for me was, I want to do Napoleon and I want to have Joaquin Phoenix, and I just spoke with Jodie Comer and I want her to be Josephine [Bonaparte] and the story is fundamentally locked into the need that these two had for each other and there’s a story in that. On top of that, there’s also his entire career-he did 61 battles. I’m trying to tell the story where we see six important battles.”
It’s a colossal venture and alongside the impressive battle scenes, a large part of Kitbag’s narrative will form the relationship that Napoleon (Joaquin Phoenix) shared with his beloved wife Joséphine (Jodie Comer). The presence of Phoenix and Comer is also something to get very excited about. Not only is Phenix regarded as one of the best actors of his generation and an Academy Award winner to boot, but the presence of Jodie Comer, who stunned in Scott’s last historical epic The Last Duel has us waited with baited breath as to what her performance will look like in Kitbag.
Here’s the official synopsis:
An original and personal look at Napoleon Bonaparte’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine.
While there is no confirmed release date for Kitbag just yet, with production now underway it’s likely that we’ll see the film released in either late 2022 or early 2023 just in time for Oscar consideration.
