Sylvester Stallone brings the action in ‘Samaritan’

When it comes to A-list action heroes they don’t get much bigger than Sylvester Stallone. From Rocky Balboa to John Rambo, John Spartan to Barney Ross, Stallone has created some of the best ever modern-day action heroes and now he’s stepping back into the superhero realm for a grim-dark action thriller experience with Samaritan.

Here’s the official synopsis:

A young boy comes to the realization that a famed superhero, who was thought to have gone missing after an epic battle twenty-five years ago, may in fact still be around.

Stallone stars as Joe Smith, an ordinary, grizzled garbage man who lives day to day and has to contend with the passing of time, and the memories of his past. But while Smith might appear to just be a regular guy, he was in fact one time the famed superhero known as Samaritan, and now he’s needed again.

Stallone has recently taken to the superhero genre with enthusiasm having starred in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and The Suicide Squad and now with Samaritan he’s approaching the genre with a focus on character and perspective and the character of Joe Smith looks to promise him a unique challenge.

Grappling with themes of loss, age and the passing of time, Samaritan appears to be a unique drama experience, but don’t worry because director Julius Avery also turns up the volume and there’s plenty of bone-crunching, body-smashing action as Stallone gets to work. While Samaritan does bring a fantastical superhero style to its action, Avery also focuses on making the action contemporary and gritty in its presentation. These action set pieces look particularly intense and action fans will be happy to see Stallone back in the fight again.
