Here’s the official synopsis:
A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.
With his work on Whiplash, La La Land and First Man, Damien Chazelle has shown himself to be a auteur in the making, and now he takes the art of cinema to the extreme with Babylon, and his story of the boozy, drug-induced, sex-crazed, party-tastic time of the early 1920s and the dawn of Hollywood. Incorporating elements of a pre-code Hollywood, when the champagne flowed and the morals were looser and he’s got a terrific canvas to tell this grand story upon.
Hollywood A-lister and Academy Award-winner Brad Pitt stars as Jack Conrad, a hard-partying “über-movie star,” who Chazelle says was inspired by the likes of John Gilbert, Clark Gable, and Douglas Fairbanks. Conrad is also a man who best days are behind him, and he’s trying to find a new place to settle into his career as a leading man.
Pitt’s Conrad is juxtaposed with Margot Robbie’s Nellie LaRoy, a scrappy aspiring actress who’s an amalgam of early stars like Clara Bow, Jeanne Eagels, Joan Crawford, and Alma Rubens. Declaring that she ‘just wants everyone to party, forever”, Robbie’s Nellie is the first original ‘It Girl’, and this wild child is ready to make Hollywood serve her in every possible way.
Bold, bright, and bombastic, Babylon is shaping up to be film that will completely light up your senses with its flashy, brazen imagery, but behind the glamour is a compelling multi-character story, and Chazelle’s handling of drama will be on full scale in this new feature.
Get ready to break all the rules and party to when the sun comes up when Babylon arrives in cinemas on January 19.
