‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ – Review
Hold on to your capes, folks! The electrifying sequel to 2019’s superhero hit is back and it’s a lightning bolt of pure fun. Shazam: Fury of the Gods is an action-packed romp through the DC Universe that will leave you feeling supercharged and ready to save the day.
Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson (Asher Angel) and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with their adult superhero alter egos. When a vengeful trio of ancient gods arrives on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Shazam (Zachary Levi) and his allies get thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of the world.
The film picks up where the first instalment left off, with Billy Batson/Shazam (played by the charming and hilarious combination of Zachary Levi/Asher Angel) still navigating his newfound powers and grappling with a strong case of imposter syndrome (all the cool superheroes already exist!) and a sense that he doesn’t yet know where he belongs. But when a new villain emerges, the youthful hero must team up with his fellow Shazam Family members to stop the threat and save the world.
Director David F. Sandberg brings his signature blend of humour, heart, and high-energy action to the film, creating a cinematic experience that will have you cheering in your seat. The special effects are top-notch, with epic battles and jaw-dropping feats of heroism that will leave you wanting more.
But what really sets Shazam: Fury of the Gods apart is its heart. The film is packed with heartfelt moments that explore the bonds of family and the true meaning of heroism. The cast, including Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, and the rest of the Shazam Family, are given more to do this time around, each having their moment to shine – delivering standout performances that bring depth and nuance to their characters. And Zachary Levi, as the titular hero, is once again a standout in a role that he’s seemingly born to play, effortlessly balancing his character’s superheroic feats with his comedic charm and emotional depth.
There’s also the tone. Embracing the goofy and energetic teenage spirit of its main character, Shazam! Fury of the Gods dispels the grim and gloomy vibes of the recent Batman flicks, or the edgy attitude of The Suicide Squad in favour of pure, unadulterated fun that will leave you grinning from ear to ear!
Overall, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a superhero movie that truly delivers the goods. It’s a thrilling adventure that will leave you feeling empowered, entertained, and ready to save the world. My 8-year-old had the time of his life watching it, and I have no doubt that moviegoers of all ages will too! So grab your lightning bolt and get ready for an electrifying ride!
