Here’s the official synopsis:
Dutch-American football coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender) is tasked with turning the American Samoa national team, considered one of the weakest football teams in the world, into an elite squad.
Packed full of comedy, emotion and heart, Next Goal Wins charts the story of down-on-his-luck soccer coach Thomas Rongen who is given the job of turning the notoriously bad American-Samoan team into a squad that can play at the international level. And it’s not an easy-going task.
Michael Fassbender returns to the big screen after an absence away from it and proved why he’s one of the best thespians of his generation, and this role, character and narrative are a terrific fit for Fassbender. Slightly neurotic, completely dependent on alcohol and with nothing left to lose, Rongen is in desperate need of a fresh start and he finds more than he could ever have bargained for in a job and a place that is utterly life-changing for him.
Waititi is firmly in his element with this funny and uplifting true story, and this one is definitely for the underdogs. Waititi also digs in deep with his Pasifika roots for this production, and the cast is packed out with some of the best current-day Pasifika performers including the likes of Oscar Kightley, David Fane, Uli Latukefu, and Rachel House, along with the presence of Elisabeth Moss who acts as a certain kind of cheerleader and friend for the down on his luck Rongen.
Next Goal Wins is shaping up to be a very special watch for cinema audiences and you won’t want to miss out on this one when it arrives in cinemas later this year.
