‘Superman’ takes flight in epic new trailer
“Your choices, your actions, that’s what makes you who you are.”
Creative original and cinema punk rocker James Gunn is ready to take the DC Universe in a whole new direction. His forthcoming blockbuster, Superman, is shaping up to be one of the biggest releases of the year. Now, fans get an all-new look at what awaits them—and it’s a take that goes back to basics with its narrative and exploration of the world’s first-ever superhero.

Superman explores Clark Kent/Superman’s (David Corenswet) journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his adoptive human family in Smallville, Kansas.
As the first chapter in James Gunn’s all-new DC Universe, Gods and Monsters, Superman promises a fresh look for Gunn’s new DC. This trailer is a large and expansive four-colour wonder that seeks to examine Superman’s nature and his place as the defender of ‘Truth, Justice and the American Way’.
In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humour and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.
The crux of the trailer centres on David Corenswet’s new look and impressionable Clark Kent/Superman, who is attempting to find his way in the world, and is juggling his desire to bring peace and unity to the world, while also dealing with the world-breaking conflict that his appearance has brought on the world. Bringing a contrast to Corey’s Clark is Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, a snappy and whip-smart reporter who takes her chance to ‘interview Superman’, and this provides the set-up for the trailer and plenty of large-scale superhero action, and it shines a light on the burgeoning romance between Clark and Lois.
The trailer offers a great look at the film’s key supporting characters, including Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardener/Green Lantern, who’s portrayed as a bit of a fearless jerk; María Gabriela de Faría as the dangerous and sinister Angela Spica/The Engineer, a member of The Authority who comes into conflict with Superman.
Nicholas Hoult also makes a fuller appearance in this new trailer as Superman’s archnemesis, Lex Luthor, and he showcases a great antagonism that is directed at Corenswet’s Superman. Clad in form-fitting tailored suits and having packed on some serious muscle, he’s ready to go toe to toe with Superman, and he’s dripping with arrogance and intensity, which will make his Luthor a really interesting villain to watch on screen.
This new Superman trailer is a solid shot of energy. Gunn appears to be leaning heavily into the film’s comic book legacy, and you feel that brightly coloured fantasy world come to life. If I had to define a favourite part of the trailer, then it has to be the inclusion of Superman’s playful companion, Krypto, the Superdog. I reckon that Kyrpto is going to steal every scene that he’s in!
