Jason Statham and David Ayer are back after their high-flying action cinema tornado, The Beekeeper, with A Working Man, and this action flick is about as subtle as a train crash, and delivers all on its junky action spectacle.

Levon Cade (Jason Statam) left behind a decorated military career in the black ops to live a simple life of working construction. However, when human traffickers kidnap his boss’s daughter, his search to bring her home uncovers a world of corruption far greater than he ever could have imagined.

When it comes to action cinema, Jason Statham is THE MAN and has set the standard for explosive action set pieces that throw him into harms way with no thought given. He’s a performer who has delivered us some of the best action pictures in the last two decades with the likes of The Expendables, The Transporter, Death Race, The Mechanic and recently Hobbs & Shaw. But he’s aslo taken on some absolute clunkers as well, WAR anyone? Now he re-teams with David Ayer for A Working Man, and this is a junky action fest taken to a new extreme. Working with celebrated Hollywood legend Sylvester Stallone could have left us with something interesting, like the excellent Homefront, but instead we’ve been left with A Working Man, and this picture is just so over-the-top that it still manages to be fun.

While I think the experience of making Suicide Squad has deeply traumatised David Ayer and his ability as a director, and it’s been apparent in both <emT>he Beekeeper and A Working Man, it’s almost like he and Stallone watched John Wick, went to Chat GPT and typed in ‘make John Wick with Jason Statham’. The result is A Working Man. With underground biker bars and Russian mafia owned clubs bathed in neon lights, gangsters with sparkly suits, moustache twirling, cape wearing villains and just general WTF narrative points, A Working Man is all over the show with its full on cliche-enducing action! It’s just so damn kitchy and dumb, that you can’t help but be left in hysterics, and you wonder whether Ayer, the director of the Fury and Harsh Times, and writer of the acclaimed Training Day, has had his talented sapped from him after the Suicide Squad ordeal, and he’s now just letting AI do all the work.

But IF YOU FORGET about any type of narrative experience, A Working Man does deliver on its action set pieces and when Ayer finally does allow Statham’s ex Special Forces, Royal Marines Commando Levon Cade the ability to go for it, he kills everything in sight and it’s fucking AWESOME to watch! Arming himself with an arsenal of big guns, the film’s final third act is a blood bath of epic proportions as he goes to town with an M14 Rifle, and lays down a host of bad guys with this nail driver of a gun, before slicing up the remaining bad guys with a KA-BAR, and it’s bloody brutal! He’s got a no-holds barred drive to save Jenny (Arianna Rivas), the daughter of his employers, and it’s satisfying to watch him punish her kidnappers and tormenters in the most ruthless way possible! David Harbour also makes a cool appearance as his friend and comrade Gunny Lefferty, and is a solid addition to the film.

A Working Man is the type of junky action film that speaks to your inner thirteen year old, with all kinds of big guns, bigger knives and buckets of blood and gore thrown in for good measure. Just forget the narrative and focus in on Statham killing everything in sight and your bound to have a fun time with this flick that speaks directly to your Limibic system.

If you’re looking for a crazy bit of cinematic fun that goes all out with the action, scares and Jason Statham’s tough guy cool, then Meg 2: The Trench is the ticket!

Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) leads a research team on an exploratory dive into the deepest depths of the ocean. Their voyage spirals into chaos when a malevolent mining operation threatens their mission and forces them into a high-stakes battle for survival. Pitted against colossal, prehistoric sharks and relentless environmental plunderers, they must outrun, outsmart and out swim their merciless predators.

2018’s The Meg was a colossal box office behemoth that nobody saw coming, and its creature feature thrills gave audiences one hell of a kick. And now, in 2023, it’s time to dive back into the action with Meg 2: The Trench, which dials the crazy up to a whole new level. Filmmaker Ben Wheatley, who has cut his teeth on a selection of hard-hitting and thought-provoking pieces such as Kill List, High Rise, Free Fire and Rebecca, changes things up for himself with Meg 2: The Trench. And he’s having a blast with it! It was noted in numerous media interviews that Wheatley could barely contain his excitement for this picture, and this enthusiasm shines through. Any notion of scientific reality is thrown out of the window as Wheatley amps up the ‘B movie’ exploitation film fun of Meg 2. And it’s one mental cinematic rush.

Hollywood’s ultimate tough guy, Jason Statham, once again returns to the world of The Meg as eco-warrior, badass Jonas Taylor. And he’s got his work cut out for him this time. While Statham lays the smackdown on both the nasty human villains of the piece, along with the colossal beasts of the ocean floor, he also has his buttons pushed as a pseudo-father-figure to the young Meiying Zhang, the daughter to his one-time love Suyin Zhang. This new element switches things up for Statham’s Taylor and keeps it interesting. Like everything he does, Jason Statham just jumps head first into the action of Meg 2: The Trench, and paired with Wheatley’s infinite enthusiasm for this story, things get explosive pretty damn quickly.

Adding to the fun of Meg 2: The Trench is noted Chinese actor Wu Jing, who takes on the role of Jiuming Zhang, Meiying’s uncle, and a compatriot of Statham. Like Statham, Jing knows how to handle himself in the action department, and he gets to do some pretty death-defying stunts in this new feature. But he also injects a solid dose of comedy and fun into the role, and it’s clear he’s having a blast in the picture. Plus, Cliff Curtis and Page Kennedy return as Mac and DJ, and again both get to play out plenty of hi-jinks in this wild and crazy action picture.

The action of Meg 2: The Trench is absolutely NUTS, and there’s plenty to get audiences amped up with the experience of this picture. For Wheatley, bigger is better for Meg 2, and he brings some absolutely insane stant pieces to the big screen. Jason Statham swimming 25,000ft below the surface of the globe: check. A stand-off against prehistoric dinosaurs and a helicopter: check. A full-on speed boat, harpoon battle between Statham’s Taylor and three Megs in the open ocean: check. It’s all here, and audiences looking for a rush will find it. And Wheatley doesn’t skimp on either the scares or the laughs, and there are plenty of them in this massive picture.

Meg 2: The Trench is a fanatical piece of action-sci-fi filmmaking, and it’s a damn fun watch. Just sit back and have fun with this one, and it also makes it clear that Jason Statham is the APEX PREDATOR!

We’ve been waiting with bated breath to see what the fate of Guy Ritchie’s upcoming dapper spy thriller Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre would be, and after some very long delays it’s now confirmed to arrive in cinemas next year in January 2023.

After the intense rush of action that they delivered in 2021’s Wrath of Man, Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham are heading back to cinemas for a good ol’fashioned jaunt into the espionage genre with Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre…and this is a spy film that is guaranteed to be a very slick ride.

Watch the brand new trailer below:

Here’s the official synopsis for Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre:

In the film, super-spy Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) must track down and stop the sale of a deadly new weapons technology wielded by billionaire arms broker Greg Simmonds (Hugh Grant). Reluctantly teamed with some of the world’s best operatives (Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone), Fortune and his crew recruit Hollywood’s biggest movie star Danny Francesco (Josh Hartnett) to help them on their globe-trotting undercover mission to save the world.

Presented as a globe-trotting action-adventure, Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre follows ace super spy Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) and his hand-picked team (Aubrey Plaza, Bugzy Malone) who work for spymaster Nathan Jasmine (Cary Elwes) who have to stop the sale of a deadly new weapon to the lavish and loud billionaire arms dealer Greg Simmonds (Hugh Grant), and the only way they can get Simmonds attention is to blackmail Hollywood’s biggest star Danny Francesco (Josh Hartnett) to help them do it.

From there it’s a rush of double-crosses, gunfights, fistfights, car chases, explosions, scintillating seductions and all-around crazy moments as Fortune and his team race against time to stop Simmonds from getting his hands on this diabolical weapon.

For anyone wondering what a Jason Statham James Bond would look like, well, Orson Fortune is pretty much that character and he cuts a dapper figure as this very rough and ready character who fits out a tuxedo perfectly, but who can also go to work with his fists when needed.

Changing gears this time around is Aubrey Plaza and she cuts a stylish, sexy, glamourous figure as a member of Fortune’s team. Known for her dry wit, Plaza changes gears here as this alluring and capable secret agent and she completely hold her own in the trailer and in my opinion her performance here is going to be a real revelation.

This isn’t the first time Guy Ritchie has ventured into the spy genre as he brought a sense of retro cool back to the big screen with 2015’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and his work here on Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre continues in that vein. Slick, sexy and action-packed, Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre also has a terrific comedic buzz about it and is Guy Ritchie just the way we like it.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre looks like a solid action spy film and will make for a very time at the movies when it arrives IN CINEMAS next year on January 12, 2023.

Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham are back, and they’re seriously ready to take names with Wrath of Man, a dark and brutal action thriller that has taken the choke chain right off. And the result is a beast of a movie that is ready to bite!

A mysterious and wild-eyed new cash truck security guard named H (Jason Statham) surprises his coworkers during a heist in which he unexpectedly unleashes precision skills. The crew is left wondering who he is and where he came from. Soon, the marksman’s ultimate motive becomes clear as he takes dramatic and irrevocable steps to settle a score.

In Wrath of Man noted writer-director Guy Ritchie applies his unique brand of filmmaking to an intense and dark story of bloody revenge. As a filmmaker who is all business, and deeply devoted to his craft, Ritchie brings everything to the table with Wrath of Man and he anties up in good form. Taking inspiration from 2004 French film Le Convoyeur, Ritchie reshapes the narrative into Wrath of Man, a no-holds-barred dark-noir revenge, action thriller that delivers one hell of a punch and hits with the force of an M4 on full auto. Blending together a group of dangerous villains, and a compelling story, Ritchie never eases off the tension with this one, and re-teaming with long time friend and collaborator Jason Statham results in one hell of an intense watch.

Ritchie makes Wrath of Man his darkest and most brutal film to date and he uses his own unique film stylings and the length and breadth of the film noir genre to help him accomplish it. This film is film noir that cuts right to the bone, and with a narrative that features bad men doing bad things, Ritchie is able to take things right to the edge. Cinematographer Alan Stewart gives the film it’s own unique swagger and cool, while composer Christopher Benstead’s dark and moody score builds out the atmosphere that guides H’s deadly hand as he exacts his brutal plan for vengeance.

Jason Statham got his start with Guy Ritchie’s cult classic gangster film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrells, and both men have come a long way since its 1998 release. Now regarded as one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars, it’s excellent timing to see Statham re-teaming with Ritchie for Wrath of Man and these two old pals don’t waste a second with this one. As H, a mysterious and highly-skilled stranger, Statham oozes brooding cool as this dangerous and calculating individual and when he starts to go to work, the bodies soon pile up, and his ultimate agenda reveals itself piece by bloody piece.

Ritchie knows how to use Statham in the best way possible and he lets him work his brutal magic as the mysterious H. And this is a character who will scare and enthral you all at the same time. Wrath of Man is Statham’s darkest film to date and he brings this unhinged and stalking animal predator quality to H as he goes through the motions of hunting down those he holds responsible for a great tragedy in his life and the results will have audiences hooked. Statham is the ultimate anti-hero in Wrath of Man and he gives a seriously intense performance with material that works for him in all the right places.

Providing a great measure of support within Wrath of Man is an eclectic group of supporting characters who all have their moments to shine. There’s Holt McCallany as the affable, working stiff Bullet who has the run of the depot and all of its inner workings. Josh Hartnett changes things up as the cocky and loud-mouth Boy Sweat Dave, who isn’t as tough as he pretends to be and quickly ends up on H’s shit list. And then there’s Niamh Algar as the tough-talking and capable Dana, the only woman working in the depot and who quickly earns the respect and admiration of H. Ritchie lets all of these performers shine in their roles and each as their role to play in this dark and twisting narrative.

Facing off against Statham’s mysterious H are a crew of technically proficient and dangerous armed robbers lead by the calculating Jackson (Jeffery Donovan) who has his eyes set on the cash truck business. Donovan’s Jackson brings a keen sense for strategy and tactics to the table and it’s a role he excels in. But while Donovan’s Jackson might be the brains behind the operation it’s Scott Eastwood’s Jan who is the trigger man. And he’s one dangerous foe to contend with. Best described as a cold and calculating psychopath with a hair-trigger temper and itchy trigger finger, Eastwood excels as this full-on bad guy who is the real impulse of his particular crew and he’s a hell of a lot of fun to watch up on screen because of it.

Ritchie and his team crank up the action with Wrath of Man and this is one film that goes downrange with plenty of spent led. A combination of sophisticated action set-pieces and in-your-face-violence marks Wrath of Man out as something different in our current cinema age and when the bullets start flying prepare for your adrenaline to spike. Ritchie again uses action as narrative and when we see H behind the barrel of a G-36 the results are explosive and deafening all at the same time. Ritchie wastes no time in seriously cranking this one all the way up and the action is delivered with the director’s trademark intensity that results in one hell of a show.

In terms of its thematic quality, the idea of vengeance, a visceral and in-your-face vengeance is thoroughly explored as are the inner workings of different sets of the criminal underclass. Ritchie also explores the ideas of villain vs villain instead of the usual hero vs villain motif and I must say that this narrative exploration makes it that much more interesting as a narrative presentation. We view the entire length of H’s vengeance throughout this movie, and it’s interesting to see the emotional impact that it has upon this cold and distant character through the interactions and relationships held between fathers and sons, and Wrath of Man is a film that certainly has an effect on audiences who watch it.

Wrath of Man is a revenge film with a capital R and this film delivers an uncompromising dose of gritty action that will make you sit up and take notice. You won’t find a more badass film to watch this year than this one.

Guy Ritchie. Jason Statham. One hell of a collaborative partnership. And now after 16 years, these two are back for one hell of an action ride in Wrath of Man…and this one is gonna seriously cranks up your adrenaline!

Watch the all-new trailer for Wrath of Man now:

Here’s the official synopsis:

A mysterious and wild-eyed new cash truck security guard named H (Jason Statham) surprises his coworkers during a heist in which he unexpectedly unleashes precision skills. The crew is left wondering who he is and where he came from. Soon, the marksman’s ultimate motive becomes clear as he takes dramatic and irrevocable steps to settle a score.

Ritchie and Statham go old school with the action here in Wrath of Man, and this is a back to basics action piece that brings to life that classic no-holds-barred action of the late 1970s, and audiences who are seeking a rush will be in for all kinds of fun with this one.

Set to a dark and moody remix of Johnny Cash’s famed ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ the first trailer for Wrath of Man goes for it with everything that it’s got and promises an intense ride with plenty of turns and twists. Ritchie by all accounts has had a blast going to work again with Statham, and these two really have created something intriguing, with action that goes right for the jugular.

Ritchie has also assembled a cracking supporting cast for Wrath of Man which includes Holt McCallany, Jeffrey Donovan, Josh Hartnett, Laz Alonzo, Raúl Castillo and Scott Eastwood as the film’s lead bag guy and the target of H’s fury.

Wrath of Man is shaping up to be the perfect action vehicles for film fans who have been wishing for a rush, and after the long-dry spell of COVID-19 I can think of no better film to get audiences back out into cinemas for an experience that is sure to get them amped up as Statham cracks skulls and takes names.

Get ready for a hard-boiled serving of explosive action cinema when Wrath of Man arrives in cinemas on April 29.

If there’s a film that qualifies to be the biggest blockbuster of the year then it is undoubtedly Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw! This enormous action event starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham is loaded to the brim with awe-inspiring visuals and it cranks up the adrenaline!!

Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America’s Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015’s Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down. But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever — and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister — these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be abadder than themselves. Hobbs & Shaw blasts open a new door in the Fast universe as it hurtles action across the globe, from Los Angeles to London and from the toxic wasteland of Chernobyl to the lush beauty of Samoa.

One director who is leading the charge when it comes to reshaping what the action genre is capable of in Hollywood is the sensational David Leitch. And he goes for it here with Hobbs & Shaw. It’s a full-on action rush and Leitch applies considerable detail and concentration to realising every aspect of it. Narrative, character and action all weave a seamless dance between one another and the result is a richly imaginative story that pulls the audience into the massive spectacle on screen.

While it’s a given that a film of this calibre would be packed out with epic action set pieces, and these are extraordinary, Leitch has captured the family drama and comedic riffing that makes this film so compelling. His noted visual style is also on display here, and Hobbs & Shaw is one very sleek production that shines with glossy detail and slick production design that makes it pop.

Hollywood megastar Dwayne Johnson again takes centre stage here and as always he’s a treat to watch. As former DSS Agent Luke Hobbs, he’s the total package of an action man at work and when it comes to applying a beatdown on the bad guys, well, he knows how to open a can of whup ass! Johnson’s considerable charisma is on full display and he has a blast up on the screen. There’s comedy galore, and his ultimate nice guy persona creates plenty of humourous moments for audiences to indulge in.

There’s also considerable character development for the character of Hobbs and it’s extremely interesting to see Johnson stretch out in his performance. While Hobbs has always been a full-on tank of a character who can wreck anything, in Hobbs & Shaw audiences get to see his strategic mind at work and this combo of brains and brawn keeps things interesting. Johnson builds a portrait of the ultimate action hero in Hobbs & Shaw and he entertains in every way possible.

Standing next to Johnson’s Hobbs is Jason Statham’s rogue spy Deckard Shaw, and this all-around tough guy Brit goes to work. Suited up and rocking all kinds of suave charisma, Statham makes for one very debonair hero in Hobbs & Shaw! Then there are his considerable action talents, which are amongst the best in the business, and they are on display in full force with very entertaining results.

Like Johnson, audiences get to see a different side of Statham’s Shaw and while he’s been vilified as a particularly nasty bad guy in the past you learn that he might not be as bad as we think and when it counts this tough guy will have your back. Like his co-star, Statham has the time of his life here as Shaw and his talents for creating jaw-dropping action moments and jumping headfirst into the fray create plenty of fun.

Joining this mismatched pair is the sensational Vanessa Kirby and this British thespian brings plenty of sass as Deckard’s younger sister and MI6 operative Hattie Shaw who gets mixed up in Hobbs and her brothers plan to save the world. As Hobbs & Shaw’s primary female lead Kirby holds her own and she gives Johnson and Statham a run for their money when it comes to Hobbs & Shaw’s key action scenes. This girl knows how to fight and she’s got a cat-like agility to her and a talent for aerobatics that makes her utterly fearless.

Another fun part of Hattie’s character is that she doesn’t put up with the petty bickering of her brother and Hobbs and she certainly checks these boys when they need to be put in their place. With a performance that is packed out with elegance, adrenaline and a style that’s all her own, Kirby is a great new addition to the Fast & Furious franchise and I certainly hope to see more of her in this burgeoning Hobbs & Shaw franchise.

A pair like Hobbs & Shaw demands a bad guy who’s going to test them to their limits and Iris Elba’s Brixton certainly takes these two for a ride. This cybernetically enhanced superman assassin is one very dangerous opponent and he’s one villain who is always five steps ahead of the plucky Hobbs & Shaw. Elba happens to be one of the coolest performers on the planet and he radiates an effortless style in whatever he does and that’s certainly on display in Hobbs & Shaw.

Then there’s the fact that Brixton hits harder than a Black Hawk attack helicopter. Elba comes in with full force for Johnson and Statham and the resulting confrontation makes the screen shake with energy. He’s a true test for our heroes in Hobbs & Shaw and Elba makes this bad guy one very cool uber-villain.

If you’re seeking action overload, well, you can be very happy because Hobbs & Shaw delivers on it. Leitch’s history as one of the leading stunt performers of his generation, with the full resources of his 87Eleven action team, leads to one hell of an entertaining watch. Set piece after set piece, Hobbs & Shaw vibrates with energy.

This story is led by its action sequences and through the actions of our characters we learn more about who they are as characters. There are plenty of glorious moments, and some seriously beautiful hardware to light up your eyes. One such thing is Statham’s turn behind the wheel of a supped up McLaren 720S which leads to one epic joyride of a chase through the streets of London. Hobbs, on the other hand, turns his native Samoa into a full-on playground of BOOM as he takes on Brixton’s private army with plenty of old-school mana force.

But while Hobbs & Shaw is a full-on action ride, there are also plenty of light-hearted moments on display here and this is comedy that will get you giddy. Hobbs & Shaw could best be described as the high-tech version of a buddy-cop action-comedy dialed way up and Johnson and Statham have a hell of a lot of fun here. There’s plenty of macho competition going on and this gets expressed through a continual battle of one-upmanship to see who can rib the other guy with the better, more creative insult. And the laughs do follow.

Oh, and one more thing keep your eyes open because there are a few surprise appearances that will really bring a smile to your face.

One of the biggest keys to the success of Hobbs & Shaw is the concept of family and this forms a big part of the narrative of the film for both Johnson and Statham. For Deckard, it’s all about the relationship that he shares with Hattie and these siblings once again have each other’s backs as they come to terms with the consequences of the past.

The past also weighs heavy for Johnson’s Luke Hobbs and this native son heads back to his homeland of Samoa where the concept of Aiga is incredibly important for the film and when it counts Hobbs can call on his Aiga for help. And he’s got plenty of heavy hitters in his family including New Zealand sensation Cliff Curtis, WWE star Roman Reigns, football talent Josh Mauga and comedic kiwi John Tui, and the Hobbs brothers prove that family always wins out in the end.

If you’re seeking that ultimate blockbuster rush this year then make sure you check out Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw. This film delivers everything you could want out of the action genre, with a good serving of heart and family love, and it makes for a very entertaining watch.

Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are ready to hit the adrenaline switch again and in the new trailer for Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw they really dial everything up to 100!

Watch the action packed new trailer below:

Here’s the official synopsis:

Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America’s Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015’s Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down. But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever — and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister — these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves. Hobbs & Shaw blasts open a new door in the Fast universe as it hurtles action across the globe, from Los Angeles to London and from the toxic wasteland of Chernobyl to the lush beauty of Samoa.

With each new installment the Fast & Furious franchise gets bigger and bolder, and this brand-new spinoff installment is really going to bring the boom. Director David Lietch (Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde) really stacks the action up here and the result is something truly wild. Not only do we have ultimate law man Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and badass outlaw spy Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) working together this time, but this is a film that is truly going international with it’s cast and setting.

First off there’s fearless MI6 operative Hattie Shaw (Vanessa Kirby), who pulls brother Deckard and Hobbs into the fight against their most dangerous adversary yet, the genetically enhanced super criminal Brixton played by a jacked Idris Elba. And damn do things get explosive here thanks to this bad guys plan for world domination!

With their backs up against the wall, these heroes have only one place to go and that’s home. For Hobbs this means a return trip to Samoa where he join forces with his brothers (Cliff Curtis, Roman Reigns, Josh Mauga, John Tui) and together the Hobbs family and the Shaw family brace for one hell of a last stand that will decide the fate of the world.

Hobbs & Shaw is definitely big on action and it’s getting crazy here with plenty of ultra-macho car chases, along with Hobbs deciding to play tug of war with semi-trucks and an Apache attack helicopter! That’s right the action is gonna be big and this footage absolutely gets your adrenaline up.

Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw is gonna be one hell of a fun time at the movies when it arrives in theatres on August 1.

Jason Statham vs The Megalodon. Who wins? That’s exactly where we find ourselves in The Meg, an outlandishly fun sci-fi monster movie that is packed out with plenty of thrills and shocks.

200 miles off the Chinese coast, a deep sea submarine is attacked by a Megalodon, a giant 75-foot shark that was thought to be extinct for over millions of years. With the ship disabled at the bottom of the sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Statham) and oceanographer Suyin Zhang (Li Bingbing) must quickly work to rescue the crew.

Simply put The Meg is big, bold fun! Think of all of the things you loved about those classic B-movie horror sci-fi films of the 1950s and 1960s and you’ll find it here in The Meg. The plot is simple, stop the giant shark from eating all of humanity, but make no mistake there are plenty of unexpected turns here and director Jon Turteltaub works hard to really deliver some top-level Hollywood action. Part of this occurs with his reliance on practical effects, and yes I do understand that the giant 70 foot shark is CGI, but even still Turteltaub really puts the emphasis on practical in camera effects to heighten the tension and the thrills.

Turteltaub also gets lucky with his leading man and as soon as I saw that Jason Statham was readying to fight a giant shark I was like sign me up for this! Statham is a consummate professional and again brings his A-game as outlaw diver Jonas Taylor, who is not fond of rules and likes to push things to the limit. Watching his performance you can just tell that he had a lot of fun making this movie and it’s great to see him utilizing his considerable aquatic skills within the film as he was once a professional diver and even represented his native Britain in the sport.

Statham is pretty much the living embodiment of the alpha male and here he gets to prove it with his absolutely ripped physique, badass swagger and ability to swing right in and save the day. And as for the film’s stunts, well Statham jumps head first into them as he does battle with the Meg and the action on screen will certainly get your adrenaline going.

While Jaws might have made people stay out of the water, after seeing The Meg you’ll definitely think twice before taking a dip in the open ocean. This prehistoric beast is a ferocious creature and it’s appearance up on screen will definitely make you jump! Turteltaub really knows how to pull out the scares and there where plenty of moments that absolutely took me by surprise and completely caught me off guard.

If you’re looking for a film experience with some serious bite to it then I highly recommend that you check it out. The Meg is some great big monster fun and it’ll definitely amp you up with its blockbuster thrills.
