Here’s the official synopsis:

Nearly 300 years after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes, ape civilizations have emerged from the oasis to which Caesar led his fellow apes, while humans have regressed into a feral, primitive state. When the ape leader, Proximus Caesar, perverts Caesar’s teachings to enslave other clans in search for remnants of human technologies, Noa, a common chimpanzee, embarks on a harrowing journey alongside a young human named Nova to determine the future for apes and humans alike.

Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global, epic franchise set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.

As the follow up to 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is shaping up to be an utterly epic cinematic experience as audiences are drawn into the new struggle for supremacy of Earth between the apes and humanity. What we see here is the broadening of the Planet of the Apes narrative and an exciting new experience for audiences that will see them go on an incredible new adventure.

The CGI and animation involved in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes are utterly incredible to look upon and clearly indicate how powerful VFX is and how it is systematically placed within the narrative of the story. This technology powers and amplifies the performances of Owen Teague’s Noa, a young chimpanzee who embarks on his own Heroes Journey in order to bring balance to the order of this new world, and Kevin Durand’s Proximus Caesar, a brutal bonobo warlord intent on harnessing past human technologies to aid in his pursuit of ultimate power, and whose ferocity knows no limit.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will keep audiences enthralled with its grand sense of storytelling and incredible visuals, and this is one science fiction epic that you’ll want to witness on the big screen when it arrives in theatres on May 9.

Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species, and the future of the planet.

Director Matt Reeves has drawn his battle lines between Andy Serkis’ Caesar and Woody Harrelson’s vindictive Colonel, and it promises to be one hell of a showdown.

The final trailer also highlights some particularly intense action set pieces, and the masterminds at Weta Digital have done a fabulous job imagining this savage future Earth.

War for the Planet of the Apes will be released on July 12 in New Zealand and Australia and on July 17 in the US and UK.
