There’s a particular kind of cinematic thrill that comes from watching one man stand alone against the impossible, and Project Hail Mary taps directly into that primal nerve. Adapted from the best-selling novel by Andy Weir, this space-bound survival epic and quintessential buddy-comedy trades Weir’s interest in Martian soil for interstellar darkness, and the result is a gripping, high-concept ride that leans hard into notions of isolation, friendship, and what it means to touch the cosmos.

Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory slowly returns, he soon discovers he must solve the riddle behind a mysterious substance that’s causing the sun to die out. As details of the mission unravel, he calls on his scientific training and sheer ingenuity — but he may not have to do it alone.

Isolation, Intelligence, and Instinct

The premise behind Project Hail Mary is deceptively simple: lone astronaut Dr. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up aboard a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or how he got there. Slowly, and albeit painfully, the truth unravels; he is humanity’s last shot at stopping an extinction-level event.

From that moment on, Project Hail Mary locks into a tight, cerebral rhythm. This isn’t a bombastic, laser-blasting sci-fi spectacle (though it has its moments). Instead, it thrives on problem-solving, on the tension of equations scribbled in desperation, and the suffocating weight of isolation. That is until an intrepid first act surprise shows up, and directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller completely change up pace of this film wirh a jolt of rock star energy and the presence of first contact with Grace running into Rocky, a fellow astronaut of extraterrestial origin who like Grace is tyring to save his own race, and from their the race is on to save the comos.

Lord and Christopher genuinely raise the stakes at every level, and emotion and energy collide for a picture that takes you on an utter thrill ride, with every small victory leading to moments of fist-pumping adulation, and it makes for one wild trip into the unknown of space.

Gosling Carries the Void

Let’s be clear, Project Hail Mary rests on Ryan Gosling’s shoulders as Dr Ryland Grace, and he doesn’t just carry this monumental epic of vast cosmic sci-fi energy, he utterly owns every moment of it.

As a performer, Gosling represents a peak level of masculine cool, but throughout his tenure, there’s been a boyish goofiness to his performances, and here he gets to play out the notion of the everyman, accidental hero as Grace. At the centre of his performance is a stripped-back honesty, and he doesn’t play the astronaut as a superhero; instead, he’s a man constantly on the edge of panic, masking fear with logic and humour. It’s a balancing act that works beautifully, giving the film both emotional grounding and a surprising sense of levity.

His comedic timing, dry, almost self-deprecating, cuts through the tension at just the right moments. But when the moments get heavy, he unleashes a huge barrage of emotion, and we see a man who, when the going gets tough, has to outthink the impossible situation around him, and it’s here where Project Hail Mary finds its gravitas.

Science as Spectacle

Where Project Hail Mary truly distinguishes itself is in how it treats science, not as background dressing, but as the main event.

This is a film that respects its audience. It doesn’t dumb things down; it invites you in. Molecular structures, astrophysics, and experimental theory become tools of survival, and watching Grace piece together solutions feels as thrilling as any action set piece.

It echoes the DNA of The Martian, but where that film felt grounded and earthy, Project Hail Mary is a far more meditative, thought-provoking, and existential in its delivery. The stakes aren’t just survival; they’re the continuation of life itself.

A Story That Expands Beyond One Man

Without delving into spoilers, the film doesn’t remain confined to a simple “man vs. space” narrative. It evolves. It surprises. And in doing so, it introduces elements that shift the emotional and philosophical weight of the story in unexpected ways. And that surprise comes in the form of Grace’s fellow space companion, Rocky.

A fellow ‘astronaut’ from a species known as the Eridians, Rocky, named by Grace after Rocky Balboa, becomes his consistent companion and friend, and in watching the two of them seeking a solution to an intersetellar problem, audiences are able to explore a far richer narrative: one of connection, cooperation, and what the true nature of friendship, and indeed humanity really means. And it’s in these moments that the Project Hail Mary reveals its soul, and audiences will feel every single moment.

Final Verdict: Hope, Lit by the Fire of the Cosmos

Project Hail Mary is smart, tense, and a deeply human piece of science fiction; it is a total experience, trusting its audience to think, feel and contemplate on our own place in the universe and what it means to be human. It’s another reminder that sometimes the most compelling heroes aren’t the loudest; they’re the ones quietly refusing to give up when the universe says they should, and that travelling at the speed of light is always a better experience when you’ve got someone to share it with.

We’re currently in a new golden age of action cinema thanks to a mad group of maverick stuntmen turned filmmakers at 87North, and their rambunctious energy and thrill to entertain has led to The Fall Guy, a blockbuster that’s big on action, laughs and romance and that makes for the perfect cocktail of cinematic fun that audiences have been waiting for.

Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling), a battered and past-his-prime action choreographer, finds himself working on a film set with Tom Ryder, a famous actor for whom he had doubled long ago. When Tom goes missing and the film, which is being directed by Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt), Colt’s ex-girlfriend in her directing debut, is in danger of being shut down, Colt volunteers to find Tom and save Jody’s debut film.

When it comes to the action game, stunt man turned filmmaker David Leitch has been right at the forefront of the changing of the guard and has brought a new energy, pace and creativity to a genre that in the mid-2010s was becoming stale. With work on projects such as John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, and Hobbs & Shaw, Leitch took his considerable experience and helped push the genre into an entirely new direction. The Fall Guy is his most ambitious and personal project to date, resurrecting the classic television series for a whole new generation. Giving it a fresh direction for a brand new audience, Leitch makes a film that is a throwback to those classic action pictures of the late 1970s/early 1980s. With a solid mix of action, romance and comedy, there’s a terrific retro feeling to The Fall Guy, and there’s a certain Smokey and the Bandit/Every Which Way but Loose quality to the picture that only adds to the fun. Leitch makes this a true blockbuster experience in every sense of the word.

Ryan Gosling is the reigning king of pop culture blockbuster cool at the moment, and he gets to bring in his own Clint Eastwood-macho style as the aptly named Colt Seavers in The Fall Guy. And boy, does he have a blast. As a past prime stuntman who has earned the name of ‘The Fall Guy’ due to a tragic accident, Gosling’s Seavers starts out as a down-and-out loser who heeds the call to adventure and gets the chance to be the hero again! Gosling rolls with the punches, and his complete physical performance, sharp wit, and smouldering presence lead him to drive fast cars, fight the bad guys, kiss the girl, save the day, and the movie, that the love of his life is making. Gosling also gets put through the wringer thanks to 87North, and he puts himself on the line to deliver big on the action set pieces, and it’s a damn blast!

Paired next to Gosling’s Colt Seavers is Emily Blunt as Jody Moreno, Colt’s ex-girlfriend and a camera operator turned first-time director, and her presence brings a wicked love story to the big screen that audiences will holler for. Blunt’s Jody holds all the cards, and after Colt’s literal ‘fall from grace,’ she’s left reeling for a life and a love that could have been, and this adds a dose of tension that leads to one of the film’s most memorable ‘relationship’ sequences in the picture. Like Gosling, Blunt is just having a fun time with the film and takes inspiration from the life of Kelly McCormick, Leitch’s real-life wife and producer, and her performance carries a Ginger Rogers quality to it that produces plenty of spark in this throwback to the classic rom-com.

The Fall Guy also has some key support players, and they bring their A-game. Winston Duke is Seavers’ best friend and stunt coordinator, Dan Tucker, who is the facilitator not only for a certain reunion, but when the bullets start flying, he takes it up a notch, and under his watch, things get explosive. Aaron Taylor-Johnson gives a scene-stealing performance as Tom Ryder, a world-famous action star and complete a**hole diva who’s as smart as a box of rocks and who pulls Colt into a whole heap of trouble. Finally, the always fantastic and spontaneous Hannah Waddingham is superb as Gail Meyer, Jody’s executive producer, and with her big hair, power suits, and reliance on Diet Coke, she makes for a character who completely goes from A to Z through the course of the picture.

The Fall Guy is an action film that goes to the MAX, and you can forget about the CGI here because this is Leitch and his team at 87North going all the way with the action. And it’s a rush! Car chases, glass falls, fist fights, helicopter dives, and some damn big explosions are all present and practical, and your adrenaline will spike with this picture. Leitch has followed a proud tradition of stunt performers like Hal Needham and Terry Leonard, and his passion for his craft speaks through in the bombastic, over-the-top cool that is on display in this picture. But it’s not just action that’s driving The Fall Guy; this is a film that honours the stuntmen, stuntwomen and other crew on set who help to bring about the movie magic that dazzles us all. It’s a touching tribute to those behind the scenes, and this only adds to the joy of the whole experience.

The Fall Guy has everything audiences are looking for in a movie: action, romance, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, LOLs, KISS, unicorns, and a dog called Jean Claude. So grab yourself a spicy margarita and get ready for a total hit of blockbuster fun because The Fall Guy is a cinematic experience that gets the thumbs up!

Watch the official trailer for The Fall Guy below:

Here’s the official synopsis:

A battered and past-his-prime stuntman, Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling), finds himself working on a movie set with the A-list star for whom he doubled long ago. When the star goes missing, and the film,. which is being directed by Colt’s ex-girlfriend, Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt), is in danger of being shut down, he volunteers to investigate the disappearance and find the missing actor.

2024 is shaping up to be a very big year for cinema fans, and bringing the action is David Leitch, Hollywood’s go-to director for big bombastic action done right! And with a list of credits including Deadpool 2, Hobbs and Shaw and Bullet Train, they’ve found the right guy for the job with The Fall Guy. What makes this an even bigger thing for Leitch is that he himself is a former stuntman and a principal at 87 Eleven, the action madhouse stunt production house that is re-writing what film action is, and you know he wants to make The Fall Guy authentic. Leitch has doubled for some of the biggest names in the business, including being the principal stunt double for Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, and from this first trailer, he’s really cranked things up for The Fall Guy.

Leitch has given the film a crazy level of on-screen realism, and make no mistake; everything has been captured in frame here. There’s no mincing about with complex CGI work, nope, Leitch and his team take us back to the good old days of noted stunt legends Hal Needham and Terry Leonard and make this an absolutely crazy watch. But mixed in with the fist fights, car wrecks, and multiple explosions is a narrative with real character work, laugh-out-loud comedy, a spot of romance and plenty of heart. It’s clear that The Fall Guy will be a film that audiences will absolutely applaud.

Ryan Gosling is in his element as past his prime stuntman Colt Seavers, and he’s having a blast with the material. Gosling mixes it up with a performance that is a mixture of laid-back surfer cool and impromptu class clown, and Colt sure does get put through the ringer in this one. Matched up to Gosling is the delightful Emily Blunt as the whip-smart Jody Moreno, a young woman who is set to be Hollywood’s next big thing, and she gets taken on one crazy ride thanks to Colt’s antics.

The Fall Guy looks like it will be a straight-up blast of fun for cinemagoers, so brace yourself for things to get wild when it arrives in cinemas on February 29.

Hey there Barbie, let’s go party! The pure pink neon dream of Barbie Land arrives in cinemas with 2023’s most anticipated film of the year, Barbie, thanks to the imagination of Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and a whole host of Barbies and Kens, and it’s without-a-doubt one of the funniest, sparkliest and smartest films I’ve ever seen.

After being expelled from the utopian Barbie Land for being less-than-perfect dolls, Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) go on a journey of self-discovery together to the real world.

For more than sixty-four years, Mattel’s Barbie has provided little girls with a heroine who showed that they could be anything they wanted to be. As an icon of femininity itself, Barbie inspires love and happiness in the minds of so many people, and now her story arrives on the big screen. And it’s everything. Filmmaker Greta Gerwig jumps into the plasticised world of primary colours, stylish fashions and beach party-dreamhouse fun and delivers audiences a cinematic feat that is both everything they would hope for and incredibly thought-provoking at the same time. With its self-aware narrative and fully rendered vision, Barbie is the story of one doll’s journey to discover self-love and the acceptance of who she is, and her story will touch your heart.

Gerwig’s vision for Barbie is enormous, and she takes the famed doll and her hapless boyfriend, Ken, on a massive voyage of self-discovery. This is a narrative that works on so many different levels, and Gerwig takes a focus that is not only celebratory of Barbie and the phenomenon that she is, but also dissects the manufactured illusion that surrounds her. A key source for the story, and Gerwig’s direction, is Mary Pipher’s Reviving Ophelia, which accounted for the effects of societal pressures on teenage girls in the 1990s, and its text has a big impact on the direction of the story. This narrative is filled with unexpected surprises and smart thematic touch points which resonate with all of the audience, and Gerwig has crafted a film for everyone.

In a piece of perfect casting, Margot Robbie is Barbie. With her flowing platinum blonde hair, shapely figure, flawless smile, stylish wardrobe, cheerful and exuberant personality and sublime life in Barbie Land, she’s the doll with everything. She is everything. And that’s where it gets interesting. When her perfect life suddenly takes a not-so-perfect turn, we see this Barbie undertaking a mission to enter the ‘real world’ and come face to face with reality, and it leads into the most transformative arc for this iconic character.

Robbie’s portrayal of Barbie is her seminal performance. Initially shaped by ideas of beauty, fun and exuberance, it soon becomes clear that there’s a lot more going on for Barbie. And she’s in for a wake-up call in the real world. This narrative pushes Robbie in every direction, and her concentration and commitment to the character is flawless. We see the world through her eyes, and she offers the audience a reflection of our own reality that none of us is expecting. Robbie’s an actress with her finger on the pulse of what her audience wants, and she delivers an incredibly powerful presence as Barbie that will resonate with all who watch her.

He might be a 10, but he’s just a Ken, and Ryan Gosling is a piece of genius casting on behalf of Gerwig to bring this plasticised doll to life. As the egotistical, vain, narcissistic, and thoroughly idiotic Ken he excels. But even though he might be ‘perfect’, Gosling’s Ken is completely insecure, desperate and needy for Barbie’s love and attention, and Gosling’s performance is addicting to watch. Like Robbie’s Barbie, he goes on quite a journey in this story, and he sure brings the ‘kenergy’. He also shares a natural chemistry with Robbie, and their back-and-forth only adds to the energy and fun of the picture.

A key part of the joy of Barbie is its fully realised world-building, and there’s a whole host of Barbies and Kens that make up this picture. Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Sharon Rooney, and Dua Lipa bring a considerable level of energy as our Barbies, while Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans and Ncuti Gatwa make for plenty of fun as the Kens. Michael Cera acts as a touchpoint for normalcy as Allan, and then there’s Emerald Fennell as Midge. Poor Midge. Of vital importance to the film’s narrative is America Ferrera as Gloria, who serves as a reflection for the audience and whose sense of self as the ‘every woman’ leads to the film’s key revelation. All of these performers bring such jubilation to the film and make it that much more special.

As an experience, Barbie is a film with serious style and Gerwig and her production team fully embrace a sense of real ‘authentic artificiality’ that is mirrored in a sense of nostalgia and memory. Barbie is a film of contrasts, with the plasticised, almost Technicolor presence of Barbie Land, which finds its inspirations in the classic Americana of the 1950s, the French Riveria of the 1960s, and the pumped-up consumerism of the 1980s with our own world. Set designer Sarah Greenwood and decorator Katie Spencer have permission to dream with this picture, and what they realise is spell-bounding. Costume designer Jacqueline Durran’s work on the film is out of this world, and she takes inspiration from Barbie’s collected wardrobe and pairs it with unique Chanel pieces that express different ideas of femininity throughout the picture.

Barbie is a pure, dazzling party of delight, and the film’s music has a major influence on the audience’s interaction with the narrative. Gerwig and producer Mark Ronson bring together a ‘guilty pleasure’ mix of fun and sound in the music of Barbie and artists including Dua Lipa, Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice with Aqua, Charli XCX, Karol G and Aldo Ranks, Sam Smith, Tame Impala, Haim and Billie Eilish bring their unique talents to a fabulous soundtrack. The music of Barbie is a unique character within the film, and you’ll be grooving in your seat with this funky jukebox of hits.

With its clever narrative, fun characters, stylish costumes and a production filled with every shade of pink imaginable, Barbie has everything that audiences could want. But within its story is a deep and layered thematic story that examines the very idea of womanhood itself. Gerwig balances the light, energy and whimsy of Barbie with her beach days, girls’ nights and dance parties with a serious exploration of the female self and spirit. This film offers a touching exploration of femininity in today’s age, and Barbie’s place within it, and audiences will find themselves extremely moved by it.

Barbie is a cinematic experience of pure happiness and joy that will get audiences dancing in their seats. You can’t help but embrace the enchantment of this magical movie experience, so grab your girlfriends and maybe a Ken or two, and head along for the best day out at the movies EVER!

And it’s freaking AWESOME!

Watch the brand-new trailer for Barbie NOW:

Here’s the full synopsis:

To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.

As one of our most anticipated films of 2023, this new trailer for Barbie has us hyped and it gives audiences a terrific impression of what audiences can expect from the film. Building off of the recent teaser trailer, this full trailer for Gerwig’s Barbie showcases Margot Robbie’s Barbie living the perfect life in Barbie Land. Until she starts to get real. With reality closing in around her, she has to undertake a journey to the ‘Real World’, with her happy idiot boyfriend Ken (Ryan Gosling) in tow, and it’s there they find equal parts trouble and fun.

Gerwig’s focus with the Barbie film is to craft a film that will appeal to a wide array of viewers. And with you’re a Barbie-made fanatic, or someone who has given up on the beloved doll, you’ll be very pleased with this movie. With its neon colour palette and fun-loving vibes, Barbie looks like a rollicking good watch, but set against this is a considered intellectualism and a great sense of satire that will bring a smile to audiences’ face. Both drama and comedy appear to have the perfect match in this film, and there’s a good dash of romance and adventure that will bring a smile to audiences’ faces.

From the very beginning, Margot Robbie was perfectly cast as Barbie, and she shines in this new trailer. And paired with Ryan Gosling as the goofy and hapless Ken, we have a pair that will level the experience of this film up and it all leads to plenty of laughs. As a performer, Robbie is never one to shy away from a challenging role, and her performance as Barbie appears to give her the most complex role of her career to date. And we can’t wait to see what comes next with it.

Along with its colourful and chirpy characters, it’s the sense of Barbie’s greater ambience, colour palette and design that draws audiences in. This clash of the manufactured plastic illusion of Barbie Land with that of our real world was a conscious decision on behalf of Gerwig who drew inspiration from classic musicals including The Red Shoes and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg for the film’s aesthetic in what she calls ‘authentic artificiality’. Audiences will want to get down and party with the Barbie movie and following the release of the trailer, pop star Dua Lipa, who portrays Mermaid Barbie in the film, has released a brand new song from the film’s soundtrack with ‘Dance The Night’.

Check out the full video for ‘Dance The Night’ below:

We’re ready for the pastel-coloured, Barbiecore fun that awaits with Barbie arrives in cinemas on July 20, and this is a cinematic experience you’re not going to want to miss out on.

With a stacked cast headlined by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, and bringing new life to the icon that is Barbie, this new trailer for the Barbie movie promises plenty of sun, fun, beach parties, accessories and all things pink and we can’t wait to see what comes next in this hilarious new film.

Watch the new trailer for Barbie here:

Here’s the official synopsis:

To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.

Noted filmmaker Greta Gerwig is ready to spin the world’s best-known doll, Barbie, for a loop with her brand new movie that finds a Barbie (Margot Robbie) who is not quite perfect and is seemingly kicked out of Barbieland, with her dim-witted boyfriend Ken (Ryan Gosling), who suddenly find themselves in the real world and it gets crazier from there.

This first trailer for Barbie is just wild and Robbie and Gosling appear to be in their element. While the first teaser trailer gave us a taste of what was to come, this new teaser trailer really highlights the aesthetic, tone and comedy that the movie is about to give to audiences and it’s just pure fun.

Gerwig promised audiences something different with the Barbie movie and with its pink aesthetic, accessories galore and back and forth banter between Barbie and Ken, along with an expanded world of Barbie’s and Ken’s, the Barbie movie is going to be something that is going to truly surprise audiences.

So make sure you’re fully Barbiecore ready for all kinds of fun, laughter, surprises and hi-jinks when Barbie arrives in cinemas on July 19.

Directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie will bring to life the story of the famed doll like never seen before, and celebrated performers Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are stepping into the story as Barbie and Ken. But this isn’t the film you think you’ll be getting with Gerwig and Robbie working to subvert the expectations of audiences and give them something wild and crazy and something they didn’t quite expect.

This first teaser trailer is exactly in that mould as Gerwig riffs off of the famed opening to Stanley Kubrick’s seminal science fiction work, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and announces the arrival of Robbie’s Barbie. It’s a snapshot of what is to come, but this film looks loud, bright and wild and audiences will be in for a hell of a lot of fun with Barbie!

To the reach the moon. At one time it stood as but a mere dream. But for a determined, disciplined and courageous pilot turned astronaut named Neil Armstrong it would be a quest that he would have to fulfill.

That is where director Damien Chazelle takes us in First Man and it’s an ambitious and utterly magnificent piece of cinema.

The riveting story of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969 and the sacrifices and personal cost—on Armstrong and on the nation to accomplish one of the most dangerous missions in history.

First Man is nothing short of an astonishing. Narrative, direction, casting, costuming, set decoration, special effects, visuals effects and musical score all come together to create an incredibly compelling piece of cinema that pulls your attention inwards and takes you on the journey of one man’s quest to be the best, reach the moon and touch the stars in the process.

From Whiplash to La La Land Damien Chazelle has shown that he has the makings of a modern age cinema autuer filmmaker and in my mind he solidifies that standing with First Man.

Grounding his film in deep emotion and themes of obsession and wonder, Chazelle chronicles one man’s single-minded pursuit for the stars, while also capturing the incredible bravery that was needed to the accomplish the mission. As a director Chazelle has already proven that he has a strong eye for detail and that is readily apparent here in First Man as he and his team painstakingly bring to life the realities of the 1960s space program and NASA when it was still a nuts and bolts organization. Everything has an emphasis on the practical rather than the aesthetic and you get a picture of just how intense the training regime was to put these men on the moon. The film’s detail is particularly amazing to behold and you definitely feel the claustrophobic confines that these astronauts experienced.

Ryan Gosling is an actor who never disappoints and here he gives another brilliant performance. His portrayal of Neil Armstrong is strikingly true to life and you get a vision of an uncompromising perfectionist and high-performance individual who was willing to do whatever it took to get to the moon. His commitment to the Moon Mission is all encompassing and this desire to reach the lunar surface separates him from all those around them.

In his personal life Armstrong was regarded as somewhat of a recluse and had a hard time interacting or relating to others and this is expertly captured here. Even with his wife Janet (Claire Foy), you feel a certain detachment from everything as his all-consuming desire for the Apollo mission pulls him away from everything in his life.

Gosling’s performance has a lot to do with what is not said and instead relies upon a sense of delayed reaction and repressed emotion and all of this creates a portrait of an obsessed genius who speaks with his actions, rather than with his voice. Make no mistake Armstrong was a hero of the highest order and his bravery borders on the extreme, but its interesting to see this portrait of a quiet achiever who does not ask for fame or glory, but simply wants to accomplish incredible things.

Standing beside Gosling and with a performance that in my opinion completely steals the entire movie is Claire Foy as Armstrong’s wife Janet and her performance is simply remarkable. Next to Gosling, Foy’s performance is the center piece of the movie and the one which really commands your attention. As the emotional core of the film you see in her the reaction of just how monumental this feat is and more importantly the cost that is brought to bare from the pursuit of lunar surface. At times you feel that Janet is the only sensible person in the entire room as she seems to grasp the bigger ramifications of the personal costs that these astronauts families have to suffer from their pursuit of solar glory.

Foy’s performance is tinged by concern and restlessness as she sees the intensity that Neil suffers through and the tragedy that befalls so many on the quest for the moon. Like Gosling her performance is again rather physical in nature and not reliant on vast amounts of dialogue. And while the relationship they share is estranged at times you get a deep sense of the love they hold for each other and the extraordinary things they allow each other to do.

In terms of visual spectacle First Man ranks up their with some of the best cinematography you’ll see all year. Cinematographer Linus Sandgren captures the film with a focus on natural light and neutral colours and it highlights the varying settings from the warmth and comfort of the Armstrong’s home to the cold, mechanized world of a still burgeoning NASA to the beautiful vistas that exist between the atmosphere and the stratosphere. Sandgren also captures the intense claustrophobia of these early rockets and just exactly what it feels like to be strapped inside a tin can placed on top of 5,000 kilo-tonnes of fuel that at any moment could burst ablaze from the most rudimentary of faults.

When Armstrong does eventually feel the power of lift-off he is thrust forward into the sky with thunderous speed and you feel every moment of it. Chazelle truly captures the ferocity of spaceflight and you really experience the intensity that gripped these astronauts as they blasted forth into the unknown. These moments are particularly heavy to witness and I could feel just how immense the achievement of the Apollo missions were after seeing these scenes unfold up on screen. These men broke through the stratosphere and reached the moon and it is an astonishing feat to behold.

Music also plays a large part in Chazelle’s film’s and First Man is no exception. Composer Justin Hurwitz crafts a beautiful, if haunting score that captures the loneliness, isolation and dreamlike quality of the moon. This sound is both romantic and edgy all at the same time and this score really stands apart from others.

First Man is a monumental cinematic feat and just like the bold events of July 20, 1969 it exceeds in capturing the minds and hearts of audiences everywhere. Film’s like this are made to watched on the big screen and when you do see this extraordinary piece of cinema make sure you savor every second of it because it certainly is a rush.

Ryan Gosling is ready to touch the moon in the brand new trailer for First Man which captures the utter heroism of Neil Armstrong perfectly.

Check out the astonishing new trailer below:

Here’s the official synopsis:

The riveting story of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969 and the sacrifices and personal cost—on Armstrong and on the nation to accomplish one of the most dangerous missions in history.

The new trailer works hard to capture a portrait of Armstrong as both hero and man. Here we find an individual whose drive is limitless, but who begins to falter from the pressures placed upon him by this grand mission. Gosling’s performance here is subtle and silent and its more about his actions and what they speak rather than dialogue or long drawn out character development as he retains the quite strength of Armstrong’s military background and his quest to reach the moon.

Director Damien Chazelle places the audience on a tight rope of tension here with period perfect detail and a race against time. Every second of the trailer is a pulsating watch and both the victory of space flight and the crushing defeat of failure are weighed hand in hand.

Credit also needs to be given to Claire Foy for her committed performance as Armstrong’s first wife Janet Shearon who has to battle the fear that her husband may never come back from his mission, while also giving him the strength and encouragement to pursue his ambition to reach the moon.

First Man is a film packed out with courage and one which will be a tremendously inspiring watch when it arrives in cinemas on October 11.

There was no greater challenge for humanity than the race to the Moon in the late 1960s, and for one man, Navy test pilot turned astronaut Neil Armstrong it was a mission that would become his singular pursuit. Now Hollywood megastar Ryan Gosling channels Armstrong’s unbreakable willpower and courage in First Man.

Here’s the synopsis:

The riveting story of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969 and the sacrifices and personal cost—on Armstrong and on the nation to accomplish one of the most dangerous missions in history.

Sensational writer/director Damien Chazelle (La La Land) leads the charge on this very ambitious bio-drama which chronicles Armstrong’s single-minded pursuit to be the first man to walk on the moon, a feat he would accomplish on July 21, 1969. But before he could take those first steps would come years of grueling training and testing to enable both the space craft and the men who piloted it to reach the lunar surface and return home alive.

Gosling absolutely commits as Armstrong and channels both his unflinching professionalism and resolute courage, along with his disdain for public life and the press and the pressures that grow on him because of it. Even though he was without-a-doubt one of humanity’s greatest ever heroes Armstrong himself had a deep dislike of the celebrity that was thrust upon him by his mission and this film appears to address the psychological pressures that this placed on him.

Co-starring alongside Gosling are an all-star cast including Claire Foy, Corey Stoll, Kyle Chandler, Jason Clarke, Jon Bernthal and Pablo Schreiber, and Chazelle’s attention to detail in both the narrative and the era of the 1960s is absolutely spot on and will really ground an audience in the drama that will take place up on screen.

Get ready to reach for the stars when First Man touches down in cinemas on October 11.
