Building on a professional relationship that started with 2008’s Valkyrie, director Christopher McQuarrie and action star Tom Cruise amp up the intensity with the seventh instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Dead Reckoning. And it’s one hell of a wild ride. Sharing a terrific creative dialogue between the two of them, McQuarrie and Cruise have one goal with Dead Reckoning: Make It Big! And damn, do they do that with this picture. What they deliver is a film of large spectacle, with all the trimmings, and this is a luxe and sexy movie to watch. They know that they’re playing in the spy genre with this film, and they push the direction of the genre to its limits with a pulse-pounding watch that will have you on the edge of your seat. It’s a truly globe-trotting adventure filled with exotic locations, glamourous costuming, fast-paced sexed-up energy, and one hell of a shot of adrenaline that leaves audiences flawed.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is a clever and intriguing watch for audiences. Both McQuarrie and Cruise draw on current real-world fears of AI and the future of global security for the foundation of the film’s kinetic narrative. Right from the opening credits, this is an explosive story that moves fast, and it takes its audience with it. There’s also the move by McQuarrie and Cruise to look back to the past and the original story of 1996’s seminal Mission: Impossible film, and this leads to interesting narrative moves. With Dead Reckoning, you get both the best of a throwback to the past and that feeling of nostalgia, along with a contemporary and speed-driven story. The focus with both our director and star is to keep things moving and give the audience the experience of the ultimate spy genre film. And we’re taken there in Dead Reckoning.

For twenty-seven years, Tom Cruise has been keeping audiences entertained as intrepid super spy Ethan Hunt. Always eager to outdo himself with each new production and push this franchise into a bold new direction, Cruise absolutely goes for it in Dead Reckoning. And it’s awe-inspiring to witness. But while it’s easy to get caught up in his death-defying stunts, there’s a true character transformation going on for Ethan Hunt this time around. Having lived his life in the shadows and being ready for each new danger, Dead Reckoning forces Cruise’s Hunt to look back on his life’s work and reconcile with the events that have led him to this new threat. We see a man who places the value of humanity first, grappling with very real issues of sacrifice and the greater good, and Hunt has a hell of a choice to make this time around. Cruise is a hundred per cent committed to his performance, and he works to give his audience a spectacle they won’t soon forget.

A new addition to the franchise is British thespian Hayley Atwell as Grace. And she holds her own by Cruise’s side. Taking on a character who is a seductive, alluring and quick-witted femme fatale in the classic manner, Atwell’s Grace is a talented thief who, unbeknownst to her, stumbles into a far more dangerous game than she could ever have thought to play. And these stakes are do or die. With her penchant for sleight-of-hand trickery, Atwell’s Grace is a great new find for the Mission: Impossible franchise and her fresh-eyed perspective is a big boost for the story. She has great chemistry with Cruise that slides between unwilling allie to sparkling romanticism, and these two are a great pair on the screen. Captivating and sexy, Atwell’s Grace is a terrific throwback to similar characters present throughout the franchise and the genre, and she jumps into the action like a natural.

Facing down Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt this time is a dark shadow from the premiere spy’s past. As Gabriel, Esai Morales, is best described as a mixture of angel and devil, the chosen messenger of a formless sentient AI god. Morales’ Gabriel is a man blessed with a talent for violence, and his past makes for a sinister echo that Cruise’s Hunt can’t shake. Morales’ performance is delivered at full force, and there’s some wicked mano-o-mano action between himself and Cruise. As a performer, Morales holds back enough to keep the intrigue heavy for audiences, and I’m certain that there’s more to appear with Hunt’s dangerous new adversary.

The IMF team are also back for Dead Reckoning, and Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, and Ving Rhames are once again having a blast with this feature. For Hunt’s team, things get personal this time around, and each of them comes to learn just how willing Hunt is willing to go to the ends of the earth to protect each of them. Pom Klementieff brings dazzling sadism to the role of master assassin Paris, a key instrument in Gabriel’s arsenal of destruction, and she misbehaves with plenty of death following in her wake. Vanessa Kirby once again brings her grand sense of opulence and control to the elegant Alanna Mitsopolis, aka The White Widow, and she’s a ball to watch on screen. Finally, Henry Czerny returns as the disdastardly Eugene Kittridge, and time has not improved his strained relationship with Ethan Hunt.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One takes audiences into action overdrive, and the intensity of this film will set your heart racing. Cruise is one who is always looking to push the envelope, and that’s exactly what he does with this feature. Beginning with an epic gun battle in the Arabian desert, to a suped-up car chase through the streets of Rome, to a dramatic and bloody beatdown in Venice, Cruise doesn’t lift his foot off the accelerator. But’s the film’s mega stunt, an awe-inspiring motorcycle cliff jump, that will leave you holding your breath and gripping your seat with adrenaline. And it’s Cruise all the way through. Knowing that the star performed the stunt on six separate occasions only adds to the thrill of it all, and audiences are delivered into a heart-stopping third-act train fight aboard the Orient Express. The action of Dead Reckoning is action filmmaking on a whole other level, and it’s a spectacle you don’t want to miss out on.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is a film that is made for the giant canvas of the cinema screen, and it’s a display of blockbuster excellence. It’s a cinema-going experience of pure fun, and you’ll want to see this one on the biggest screen possible. And all I can say is, bring on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two!

The trailer is bold and places audiences right at the forefront of the drama as Hunt faces an extreme new threat from a dangerous shadow from his past in the form of Esai Morales Gabriel. Morales’ Gabriel is hellbent on Hunt’s death, along with the literal collapse of the IMF and he’s a smouldering threat who will very happily stick the knife into Cruise’s Hunt.

And let’s not forget the action. And damn does Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One crank this up here. Not only do we have a deeper look at the film’s signature motorcycle cliff jump, but we also get a decent look at both a high-stakes car chase through the streets of London, along with a brutal fight between Hunt and Gabriel aboard a fast-moving train. And it’s winner take all!

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is fully going for it with its rush of action and energy and audiences who are seeking their adrenaline will find it with this picture when it arrives in cinemas on July 13.

We’ve been waiting a long time for Guy Ritchie’s cinematic return and we’re finally on the eve of the release of his long-awaited spy-action-comedy Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre. Re-teaming again with long time collaborator after their masterful work on the intense and driven revenge thriller Wrath of Man, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre will allow the two of them some space to play around with the spy genre and it looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun. With a packed-out supporting cast including Aubrey Plaza, Josh Hartnett and Hugh Grant, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is a film you won’t want to miss out on.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre will arrive in cinemas on January 12, 2023.

9. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Marvel Studios fans will be in for a very big treat this year with some absolutely stellar releases coming our way and one of my most anticipated Marvel releases is Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Marvel Studio’s Ant-Man films have long been some of my favourite entries in the MCU and I’m excited to see how director Peyton Reed pushes the envelope with this new entry. My MCU tastes lean more towards the spectacular and the cosmic so I’m incredibly excited to see how we get to explore the Quantum Realm and how the new big bad Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors) is about to change the MCU forever!

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will arrive in cinemas on February 17, 2023.

8. Babylon

When it comes to rising auteur cinema voices, one man leading the charge is writer-director Damien Chazelle and he’s about to make the silent movie era loud in Babylon. With a cast including Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, Babylon is shaping up to be one of my must-watch movie events of the year and this film looks sexy, glamourous, seductive, and utterly wild.

Babylon will arrive in cinemas on January 19, 2023.

7. Killers of the Flower Moon

When it comes to cinema legends they don’t come with more talent or respect for the craft of cinema than the legendary Martin Scorsese. And this cinematic visionary is ready to bring an incredible sense of drama with his high-profile historical-dramatic-crime-epic Killers of the Flower Moon. Based on the horrendous true-life murders that occurred in Oklahoma in the early 1920s, Scorsese along with his cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jesse Plemons and Robert DeNiro will no doubt bring about an intense and suspenseful watch, and Killers of the Flower Moon could very well end up being one of 2023’s best releases.

Killers of the Flower Moon will be released on Apple TV+ in 2023.

6. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

When it comes to Hollywood movie stars they don’t get much bigger than Tom Cruise, and now the king of blockbuster cinema is returning as super spy Ethan Hunt for one hell of a thrill ride with 2023’s must-watch action picture Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. This first chapter in what will be a two-part epic will be the culmination of the Mission: Impossible franchise and Cruise is going all out with this action epic and is pushing the limit when it comes to stunts and action. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is shaping up to be pure cinematic action fun and audiences will be in for a rush when it releases later this year.

5. John Wick: Chapter 4

Keanu Reeves is back as super-assassin John Wick and he’s ready to bring the wrath to the members of the High Table and bullets and blood will be spent. This fourth entry in what is one of Hollywood’s best new modern franchises continues to turn up the dial on the excitement and intensity of the cinema craft and both Reeves and director Chad Stahelski are ready to bring it with this one.

John Wick: Chapter 4 will arrive in cinemas on March 23, 2023.

4. Barbie

When it comes to 2023 releases one of my standout must-watch films of 2023 is undoubtedly Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. With Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the lead, this is an absolute must-watch 2023 and the recent teaser trailer certainly got my excitement up for this pastel-coloured extravaganza, which will deliver audiences a serious twist with its narrative. Bight, colourful and packed full of fun, Barbie will get its audience grooving.

Barbie will arrive in cinemas on July 24, 2023.

3. Dune: Part Two

In 2021 visionary filmmaker Denis Villeneuve brought the grandest of science fiction epics to the big screen with Dune. Realising the mighty deserts of the world of Arrakis, Villeneuve is ready once more to transport audiences back to this far-off galaxy as he continues to the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and his journey to becoming the mighty Muad’Dib. With his incredible returning cast including Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem and Stellan Skarsgard, alongside new actors including Florence Pugh, Austin Butler and the legendary Christopher Walken, Dune: Part Two is an epic that will be a must-see big screen event.

Dune: Part Two will arrive in cinemas on November 3, 2023.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3

The penultimate chapter of Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy is set to arrive this year, and I couldn’t be more excited to hang out with my all-time favourite MCU characters. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is shaping up to be an epically fun watch, and James Gunn is once again ready to work his magic on the galaxy’s greatest-ever group of outlaws. From the first teaser, it’s clear that the emotions are going to run high with this one and I can’t wait to hear the playlist and catch the action on this must-watch MCU film.

Guardians of the Guardians Vol.3 will arrive in cinemas on May 5, 2023.

1. Oppenheimer

But when it comes down to it there’s one film that tops my list of must-watch feature films for 2022 and that’s Christopher Nolan’s WWII historical blockbuster epic, Oppenheimer. Bringing to life the genius and terror of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s creation of the atomic bomb and the dawn of the nuclear age, Oppenheimer is Nolan firing on all cylinders and this is shaping up to be a monumental achievement in cinema. Shot exclusively with IMAX cameras, Oppenheimer is a film that audiences will want to see on the biggest screen possible and its epic scale, scope, cast and narrative make this my most anticipated film of 2023.

Oppenheimer will arrive in cinemas on July 21, 2023.
