This teaser gives audiences a taste of what is to come, and filmmaker Jon Favreau is really leaning into the classic serial-style adventure that inspired George Lucas’ imagination all those years ago, and you see this both in the action and rhythm of the trailer, alongside the new look poster for the film, which promises ‘if you’re searching for new adventure…. THIS IS THE WAY.’

The teaser trailer also hints at several important new characters to the franchise, including Sigourney Weaver as Ward, A colonel and leader of the New Republic’s Adelphi Rangers and an appearance by Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt, the son of deceased crime lord Jabba the Hutt, and a brutal gladiator who is bent on absolute power and control.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a standoff between a small-town sheriff and mayor sparks a powder keg as neighbour is pitted against neighbour in Eddington, New Mexico.

Aster takes audiences back to May 2020 in the fictional backwater of Eddington (pop. 2,634), Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix), a wheezing, anti-mask sad sack, locks horns with Mayor Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal), the slick technocrat pushing lockdowns and a massive AI data hub. Time and pressure leads their escalating feud into a full-on explosion of values and animosity that soon tips into full-blown political theater as Joe runs for mayor in a rage-filled campaign against the future of public health and tech. Emma Stone provides support as Louise, Joe’s fragile, shut-in wife gets caught in the crossfire of her husband’s political ferver, and is lured further into delusion by her conspiracy-obsessed mother (a standout) and slippery cult leader Vernon Jefferson Peak (Austin Butler) preaching viral mayhem.

Eddington has a lot going on it, and it’s a cinematic experience that is genuinely different and unexpected. Running at it’s slow burn nature never feels hinged, but when the chaos does kick off, it’s bloddy explove and you’re left in a very WTF state! Sharp, exhausting, chaotic and frequently maddening, Eddington is a savage satire of contemporary America, and it’s utterly wild and volatile that when it’s twists and turns do hit you’re left in mouth-a-gape awe.

Aster’s cast is top notch, and they pull off a bunch of characters who are generally so-messed up and unlikeable that you just can’t look away. Joaquin Phoenix is unhinged gold as Sheriff Joe Cross, who morphs from a grumpy protector to unrecognizable rage machine, grandfathered into hios role and completely out of his depth, his whispery psychosis and pseudo-leadership are mesmerising, and he takes he pushes his deranged performance to the max. Facing off against him is Pedro Pascal as slick and popular Mayor and local business owner Ted Garcia, who is fundamentally everything Cross isn’t, and he’s too keen on following money, rather than looking into the good of the community. It’s special to watch these two butt heads, and with Eddington’s unpredictability things get messy fast.

Two-time Academy Award winner Emma Stone lives up to her talent as the Louise, Cross’ disturbed, shut-in wife who is quickly losing it, and fast, and she’s only person you feel any kind of empathy for, especially in light of her husbands growing sense of mania. Then there’s Austin Butler who shows up like a warped pied piper cultist, dripping charisma and menace with every leaked livestream as the bug-eyed, enchanting Vernon Jefferson Peak.

Eddington doesn’t just reflect 2020; it detonates it, turns it upside down, dips it in venom, and hands you a gun and a meme to carry forward. It’s uncompromisingly bleak and hilariously savage, a cultural fever dream that kicks you while you’re laughing. Aster doesn’t offer healing—he offers a mirror cracked nearly beyond repair, and dares you to look anyway. This is film that is stunningly fresh, backed out with bizarre and confrontational surprises, and that is sure to cause derision. But to Aster that’s the entire point, as his fierce satire cuts close.

If you’re into films that feel like a punch to the gut wrapped in a grotesque joke, this is your desert showdown. But be warned: it’s not cathartic. It’s combustible. Eddington leaves wounds, and questions, burning long after the credits roll, and that makes it one of 2025’s most audacious cinema showings.

If Guardians of the Galaxy is Marvel’s punk rock space opera, then First Steps is its cosmic golden age love letter—a film brimming with ambition, heart, and visual inventiveness.

Shakman’s take on the Fantastic Four is equal parts space-race epic and interdimensional soap opera, and it works wonders. He understands the dynamic that makes these characters sing: the family friction, the scientific curiosity, the emotional baggage, and the raw courage. There’s style and substance in every frame, from the high-concept cosmic action sequences to the quietly devastating emotional beats between characters. It’s a film that breathes, pulsing with equal measures of drama, humour, and wonder.

Leading the charge is Pedro Pascal, whose Reed Richards is a more introspective take on the brilliant scientist. Pascal plays him not as a cold intellectual, but as a man weighed down by consequence — a leader riddled with guilt and desperation, especially regarding his best friend Ben Grimm’s tragic mutation into The Thing. There’s a beautiful tension between Pascal’s cerebral nature and his emotional struggle, and it adds gravitas to the team’s dynamic.

But the film belongs to Vanessa Kirby. As Sue Storm, she is fierce, intelligent, and emotionally resonant—the lynchpin of the team and the story. Kirby brings nuance, power, and vulnerability to every scene, and she shines both in the high-stakes battles and the quieter, human moments that define her role. It’s a star-making turn that puts her firmly at the centre of the MCU’s future.

On the flip side, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach absolutely steal the show with their sibling-style chemistry and raw charisma. Quinn brings heat and swagger to Johnny Storm, channelling that teen idol recklessness and cocky grin that defined the character in the comics. But there’s an arc of growth here too; one that gives Quinn the space to move from impetuous thrill-seeker to genuine hero.

And then there’s Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm, and folks, he’s the beating heart of this entire movie. With gruff charm and bruised soulfulness, Moss-Bachrach nails the character’s iconic line, “It’s clobberin’ time!”, with the full force of emotional resonance. He’s tragic, lovable, and fiercely loyal, and his performance is a beautiful tribute to Kirby’s original vision of The Thing as both monster and man.

As a Marvel cosmic story, First Steps doesn’t hold back. The introduction of The Silver Surfer, played with icy allure by Julia Garner, is one of the film’s most captivating moments. Garner brings regal poise and existential sorrow to the role of Shalla-Bal, a twist on the original comic canon that works wonderfully. She’s magnetic, mysterious, and otherworldly, gliding through scenes like a celestial spirit of doom and salvation.

And then there’s Galactus.

Yes, the Devourer of Worlds finally makes his full-on debut in the MCU, and it is nothing short of jaw-dropping. Voiced with gravely menace by Ralph Ineson, this version of Galactus is more than just a cosmic threat — he is an elemental force of nature, rendered in colossal scale and terrifying grandeur. His presence is felt long before he’s seen, and when he finally appears, it’s one of the most awe-inspiring moments in superhero cinema.

Visually, this film is a feast. From the chrome-slick vistas of deep space to the futuristic architecture of 1960s-inspired Earth-828, every shot is dripping with artistic detail. The costume design, production aesthetic, and visual effects are a loving homage to Kirby’s art, filled with swirling colours, cosmic energy blasts, and impossible geometry. This is a movie that wants you to believe in the impossible, and makes you believe in it, wholeheartedly.

Filmmaker Matt Shankman, who helmed the acclaimed WandaVision, has stepped into the director’s chair bring the FF to live for a new generation in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and this new trailer promises a film filled with family drama, hyperbolic sci-fi action, and plenty of touching heartfelt moments. Shankman digs deeper into the central theme of the Fantastic Four as a family, and how in their greatest hour, it’s their bonds and love for one another that will see them through their darkest test. This trailer further teases out the all-new retro-future Earth vibes of this story, and Shankman and his team have really let their imagination go crazy in creating a film filled with homages to the space-race, and the optimistic ealy years of the 1960s and the Camelot era of JFK that defined it. The film appears to be filled with a rich texture, and there’s plenty of scene chewing sparkle for you to gaze on with amazement.

While Shankman and Marvel Studios only tease out the impending action of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, it’s clear that Galactus has arrived and that it will be an utterly epic showdown. And more importantly it will be comic accurate, Shankman and his team have leaned all the way into the classic art and style of the great Jack Kirby and this shows through in the new trailer.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is shaping up to be an exciting, action-packed rollercoaster ride of fun, and will showcase the originators of the Marvel Universe in all their glory when it arrives on the big screen (and you’ll want to watch this one on the biggest screen possible) on July 24.

A young, ambitious New York City matchmaker (Dakota Johnson) finds herself torn between the perfect match (Pedro Pascal) and her imperfect ex (Chris Evans).

As a cinematic feature, Materialists is hands down the most original film we’ve seen in a very long time, and this is a romantic drama unlike any other you’ve witnessed before. Filmmaker Celine Song’s thoughts and feelings on the subject matter of dating, relationships and romance in relation to Materialists are informed by her past as a matchmaker, and she’s far and away one of the smartest working directors at the moment. There’s a deep sense of thought and whipsmart intellect present in Materialists, and it’s almost like you’ve walked in expecting some kind of run-of-the-mill romance film but instead have been treated to a thought-provoking narrative that examines the idea of human worth when it comes to marriage and connection and just where love fits into all of it.

While not wanting to divulge specific plot points or narrative features, as Materialists is best viewed when going into it with the mystery still in tack, this film takes you in many different directions, and its’ narrative, which is extremely character-driven, will keep you primed thanks to some interesting choices on behalf of Song, and a few shock revelations.

While some will believe that Materialists is your standard romantic comedy, it is rather a deeply thought-provoking drama examining themes of connection, worth, dating as a numbers game, and just what place romance and love have in relation to a world that has now come to commoditise and gamify every interaction we now engage in within our modern world. As an audience member who was seeking a fresh hook and looking for the unexpected, this really spoke to me.

Song’s approach to the romance genre as delivered through Materialists was utterly original and different, and the beats and structure of this story keep you engaged and dialled in all the way through. While this is a story of deep emotional complexity and dramatic tension, there is also an unexpected comedy that speaks softly and provides much-needed levity when you least expect it. It also must be said that this is romance filtered through the A24 lens, and this adds to the intricacy of the whole experience of Materialists and is a major driver of the original feeling and experience of the film for audiences.

Cast as the central character of Lucy is Dakota Johnson, and she perfectly embodies her character as the girl in control who, through the beats of this story, has to take a very big look at herself and the life she’s chosen to lead. For Johnson’s Lucy, everything, but especially dating and relationships, comes down to the math. And she has it all figured out. Like a cross between a claims adjuster, banker and mortician, Lucy’s job as a top matchmaker causes her to see people as nothing more than numbers and data points, and all of it in the context of our most important human connection: love. And this is where things get interesting.

Lucy hasn’t given up on love; in fact, she believes wholeheartedly in the joys of marriage and sharing a life with a significant other. However, her quest for self-acceptance and a fulfilling love is intricately tied to her clients’ needs and desires. In Materialists, she embarks on a journey to discover what will truly make her happy. Throughout the story, Johnson faces numerous choices and emotional challenges, and Song’s narrative unfolds with plenty of twists and surprises that will keep the audience engaged in her performance.

Caught up in a very intriguing love triangle in Materialists is Chris Evans as John, Lucy’s ex, who doesn’t even have the luxury of being an everyman but is simply just imperfect. As a part-time waiter and full-time struggling actor, John is a man whose life has gone nowhere and who, in Lucy’s data-driven, economic dating pool, doesn’t even get a look in. As one of Hollywood’s most handsome faces, Materialists and the role of John allow Evans to play completely against type, and there’s a raw sincerity in his character. While the word struggle seems to be synonymous with him, his intentions are above board, and he is genuinely trying throughout this narrative to prove his worth; and he has to confront his feelings and his past in order to move on from his present and into his future. What we get with Evans’ John is a very different type of performance from the actor, and he has an interesting place within this narrative.

Completing the triangle is the man of the moment, Pedro Pascal, and he brings a complete swooning charm as the seemingly perfect New York bachelor, Harry. Handsome, charming, elegant, cultured, fit, tall and most importantly, obscenely wealthy, Harry is a ‘unicorn’, and he soon catches the eye of Lucy, but in a surprise, it’s him giving the chase, and again, this is where the interest builds. As Harry, Pascal appears as his most open and inviting in any of the roles he plays, and while from the film’s marketing materials, you feel Harry’s character is going to move one way, he actually goes in the complete opposite direction. There’s an openness and introspection present within Harry’s character, and his interactions with Lucy, although deeply romantic and bubbly, also present a different type of romantic lead. Materialists see Pascal at his most attractive in the whole context, from appearance to character, and he’ll spark the interest of audience members.

As a cinema experience, Materialists is an utterly gorgeous picture to witness, and this is a film event that manifests itself as a love letter to New York and its community, vibe and atmosphere. Beautifully shot with crisp attention to light and colour by cinematographer Shabier Kirchner on 35mm film stock, there’s a crispness to the imagery, and the experience of seeing Materialists up on the big screen makes for an experience you’ll truly cherish. Materialists builds an atmosphere about it, and from lavish Manhatten penthouses to charming East Village streets to the grungy Brooklyn Burroughs, the very spirit of the New York character is carried into Materialists, and this is a film dripping with authenticity that celebrates not only an environment that never stops moving but that also draws many lovers to it.

Materialists offers a true cinematic experience, showcasing Celine Song’s remarkable talent and deep understanding of storytelling. One of the central themes of the film is the concept of value, which the characters repeatedly confront. This theme is not only explored through the competitive New York dating scene, where money often dictates worth, but also through the reduction of people, and even the idea of love, to mere numbers. This reduction is accompanied by a long list of unrealistic expectations for an ideal partner, which few can ever fulfil.

Song encourages audiences to look beyond superficial appearances. By exploring both desire and honesty, she highlights how recognising intrinsic value and seeking genuine connections can lead to more fulfilling relationships. The film prompts us to question whether, in our fast-paced, modern age — where dating has become a gamified ‘market system’ — we might be better off by opening ourselves up to love and acknowledging the inherent worth we each possess, as well as the worth we can offer others.

Celine Song’s Materialists is a captivating exploration of three characters navigating the complexities of modern dating. The film illustrates how intrinsic worth and genuine connection ultimately outweigh mere data, and it stands out as one of the most clever and original pieces of cinema released this year, showcasing the unique talent of Celine Song. Director Matt Shankman (WandaVision) is the man in charged of bringing the Fantastic Four, Marvel’s First Family into the MCU and he’s done a really special job of brining a new vibe and energy to the big screen thanks to the film’s retro-1960s vibe, and he’s really payijng tribute to the original stylings and worldbuilding of both Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the creation of this world.

This new trailer, following on the first teaser, gives audiences a greater insight into the story, with the announcement of Sue Storm’s shock pregnancy being a big part of the narrative, and also showcasing the appearance of Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal / Silver Surfer, and the impending arrival of Galactus!

The trailer showcases a great range of footage that not only showcases the FF in action but also highlights the emotional weight that these characters carry, and it’s clear that there will be plenty of heavy drama present in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Our key cast of Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/The Human Torch) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/The Thing) also have pitch perfect chemistry with one another, and there’s a lot of intrigue that fans will be able to get into and explore with this new picture.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is shaping up to be a very special entry into the Marvel Cinematic and will be a bold new step in Phase Six and the reshaping of this grand universe. After a global pandemic destroys civilization, a hardened survivor takes charge of a 14-year-old girl who may be humanity’s last hope.

The highly anticipated second season sees us rejoin our favourite characters and follow the trials and tribulations of navigating life after the fall of society. Well, that’s the standard line.

After the utter emotional roller coaster that was Season One of The Last of Us, Season Two dives right back into the action as we follow Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) in their fight for normalcy in a world ravaged by the mutated Cordyceps fungus.

As with all HBO shows, including the first season, the production value is top-tier once again, with stunning cinematography pulling you deeper into the multiple storylines and subplots. This is peak television, regardless of your general feelings about shows based on existing intellectual property.

Series creator Craig Mazin, who also writes and directs Season Two, Episode One, ‘Future Days’ has provided a masterclass in adapting an existing property to the screen here with the first episode of season two as much a visual feast as it is a compelling story. I think it would come as a genuine shock to some viewers that Joel and Ellie’s story originally debuted in PlayStation.

Unlike other video game franchise-based shows, The Last of Us can happily stand alone for viewers to get hooked without the need for prior knowledge of the stoy.

Pedro Pascal is once again at his best, portraying an older Joel who, five years on from season one, is struggling with his decisions in the final episodes of the season, in which (spoiler alert) he is involved in turning on the Fireflies to rescue Ellie from certain death. Was it the right thing to do or a betrayal? That’s one of the many questions you are left with to make your own mind up on.

A standout in the supporting cast has to be Catherine O’Hara, who portrays town psychiatrist Gail, with her own struggles towards Joel for his actions in Season One. ‘Future Days’ most impactful scenes see O’Hara and Pascal go head to head in session with the raw emotion rarely seen in this genre

In addition to the on-screen presence of O’Hara, Isabela Merced’s Dina brings a new dynamic to the story as a love interest for Ramsey’s Ellie. This hot and steamy romance looks sure to be a strong driver of the plot for the season ahead, alongside the strained relationship between teenage Ellie and adoptive father Joel.

‘Future Days’ is a hell of a start to Season Two of The Last of Us and it’s promising an intensely dramatic watch that will pull you into the burning desire for survival at any cost.
