Paying tribute to the genius of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, who pioneered the launch of the Marvel Universe with the debut of The Fantastic Four #1 in November 1961, and Marvel’s First Family would drive the precedent in superhero narrative storytelling that would come to dominate our cultural landscape. Filmmaker and Marvel Studios veteran Matt Shankman has stepped behind the camera to helm The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and he’s crafted an incredible retro-future inspired 1960s that finds The Fantastic Four, Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) and Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) facing their most daunting challenge yet in a test that will see them balancing their roles as heroes alongside their string family bond.
Set outside of the main MCU and instead confined to its own space within the multiverse, The Fantastic Four: First Steps feels like it will offer audiences a different experience from other MCU projects, and with its classic 1960s design holding true to the original vision of Lee and Kirby I believe we are in for something very special with this piece of cinema. A key part of this is its retro-future/atomic age design and setting ,and you feel the backbone of the space race present in this picture, along with a reference to JFK’s ‘Final Frontier’ idealogy and the push to explore new worlds. It all just adds to the retro cool feeling of the entire film, and there’s a fantastic nostalgic feeling to the experience of watching this trailer.
A key part of the trailer and the impact it has on audiences is the focus that the film will place on the theme of family and its importance to the FF. The chemistry of the cast looks outstanding, and they fit each of their roles perfectly. This, of course, should lead to some very interesting character moments within the film itself. This focus on the Fantastic Four family is directly felt when expressed via Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm, “whatever life throws at us, we’ll face it together. As a family,” This piece of dialogue is an expression of the entire feeling of The Fantastic Four and is a key part of the incredible impact of this trailer and the experience that awaits audiences.
