One of horror’s most enduring icons is preparing to return, and the first glimpse at Prime Video’s ambitious new adaptation of Carrie promises a bold reimagining of Stephen King’s legendary debut novel.

Prime Video has unveiled the first-look images from its upcoming Original series, with acclaimed filmmaker Mike Flanagan (Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House, The Fall of the House of Usher) bringing King’s seminal coming-of-age horror story to television for the very first time. Set to premiere exclusively on Prime Video this Spring, the eight-episode series will stream in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

Far more than a straightforward remake, Flanagan’s Carrie aims to reinterpret King’s story for the social media generation, placing its tragic heroine in a world where bullying never stops, humiliation spreads at the speed of a notification, and cruelty has become more public than ever before.

Summer Howell steps into one of horror’s most iconic roles as Carrie White, a painfully isolated teenager who has spent her life sheltered within the confines of her home by her deeply religious and fiercely controlling mother, Margaret White, portrayed by Samantha Sloyan. After the sudden death of her father forces Carrie into the unforgiving environment of public high school, she becomes the centre of a viral bullying scandal that pushes her to breaking point. At the same time, mysterious telekinetic powers begin to awaken, setting the stage for the devastating events that have haunted popular culture for half a century.

Across eight episodes, Flanagan expands King’s original novel into a richer, more emotionally layered character drama, exploring the everyday choices, acts of kindness and moments of cruelty that ultimately culminate in one unforgettable night of horror. Rather than simply asking who the monster is, the new series promises to examine the fragile line between victim, hero and villain.

Leading the ensemble alongside Howell and Sloyan are Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Tota as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle, forming an impressive cast for one of television’s most anticipated horror events.

Flanagan serves as writer, executive producer and director on four episodes, with Stephen King also returning as an executive producer, ensuring the adaptation remains firmly connected to the spirit of the original novel while charting its own contemporary path.

Few works have left as lasting a mark on horror as Carrie. First published in 1974, King’s debut novel became an instant bestseller and launched one of the most celebrated literary careers of all time, with more than 350 million books sold worldwide. Brian De Palma’s iconic 1976 film adaptation transformed the novel into a cinematic landmark and introduced generations of audiences to one of horror’s most unforgettable finales. As that classic film celebrates its 50th anniversary, Prime Video now looks set to usher Carrie into an entirely new era.

With Mike Flanagan once again exploring the intersection of grief, trauma and the supernatural, Carrie is shaping up to be far more than another remake. Instead, it promises to be a haunting, emotionally devastating exploration of adolescence, isolation and the terrible cost of cruelty; and one of the standout horror events of the year.
