Horrors rise with the full moon in Robert Eggers’ ‘Werwulf’

Project after project, including the modern masterpiece that is Nosferatu, he transports audiences into a hyper-reality of dread delivered with flawless attention to detail and blood-curdling authenticity that makes the scares even freakier, and now he’s ready to deliver his scariest project to the big screen with Werwulf.

In 14th-century England, a town is haunted by a ravenous beast that threatens the safety of a man and his family.
Building on the initial teaser trailer, this new-look trailer for Werwulf is a hell of a bite, and to push it further into its sheer madness of lycan-infused terror, Eggers also released this new look at what he claims is his darkest project yet, on a full moon. Now that’s a director who strives for lore-appropriate detail.
Werwulf follows a nameless Man in 14th-century England, who is holding a dangerous, deadly, and uncontrollable curse. When a series of mindless and sadistic acts of violence are unleashed upon the countryside, the Man must contend with the beast that lives inside him, and this is where the horrors truly start to come alive.
Eggers has assembled an all-star cast for this new production with the likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson as The Man, Lily-Rose Depp as his Wife, and Willem Dafoe as a Wolf Hunter brought in to root out and slay the beast, and it’s all shaping up to be one hell of a melodramatic and high-intensity watch as the Man and his family try everything in their power to keep the beast at bay.
In the new footage, Eggers and cinematographer Jarin Blaschke really ramp up the horror and pull audiences into a sheer, living nightmare. Grimy and laden with dread, Werwulf is unlike anything audiences have witnessed before, and Eggers amps up the fear and terror in this picture; the trailer is a spine-chilling watch, made even more so by its orthochromatic capture courtesy of Blaschke’s eye.
Then there’s the presence of the beast itself, the Wolf, still unseen, but whose presence is very much felt; and while Eggers only offers a mere taste, the blood is certainly present, and with its closing roar, you can tell that the fear is real.
