The hunt is well and truly on in Predator: Badlands, and director Dan Trachtenberg once again proves why he has become one of the most exciting voices in science fiction action filmmaking. Having revitalised the Predator Universe with the stripped-back ferocity of Prey and the high-concept mayhem of Predator: Killer of Killers, Trachtenberg now flips the script entirely. Predator: Badlands is a bold, unexpected, and wildly engaging new chapter that dares to reframe the iconic alien hunter not as the terror of the story…but as its underdog hero. And the result delivers a pulse-pounding, edge-of-your-seat experience from beginning to end.

Cast out from its clan, an alien hunter and an unlikely ally embark on a treacherous journey in search of the ultimate adversary.

This time, the focus centres on Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), a young and untested Yautja who has grown up as the runt of his tribe. Looked down upon and cast aside in a culture built upon strength, dominance, and the brutal code of the hunt, Dek is the last Predator you’d ever expect to survive. But when he’s exiled to the lawless wild planet of Genna, Dek finds his purpose in the form of a monstrous and near-unkillable beast that he seeks to claim as his trophy. What unfolds is a ruthless and primal survival tale, part rite of passage, part revenge saga, and Trachtenberg packs it with momentum, stakes, and a surprising emotional edge.

But the surprises don’t stop there. Badlands brings the Weyland-Yutani Corporation crashing into the narrative, marking a clever connective thread between Predator mythology and broader sci-fi horror lore. Their influence comes embodied in Thia, a synthetic android portrayed with remarkable nuance and unpredictability by Elle Fanning. Thia is sleek, analytical, and just off-center enough to keep audiences guessing at her intentions. Her uneasy alliance with Dek forms the film’s core dynamic: a sharp, strange, unexpectedly compelling “odd-couple” duo forged in the crucible of survival.

As Dek, newcomer Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi delivers a performance full of raw intensity, vulnerability, and simmering fire. Far from the cold, calculating hunters we’ve seen before, Dek is a character defined by pain, frustration, and a desperate need to prove his worth—not just to others, but to himself. It’s a bold new emotional lens for the Predator species, and Schuster-Koloamatangi meets the challenge head-on.

Visually, Predator: Badlands is stunning. Trachtenberg’s attention to detail in developing Yautja culture is rich, layered, and deeply immersive. The world of Genna feels dangerous and alive, thanks to the groundbreaking efforts of WETA and Weta Digital. From brutal landscapes to bone-and-metal tribal architecture to the visceral combat choreography, every frame carries weight and texture. This is a universe with history, ritual, and consequence, and the film makes you feel it.

Predator: Badlands is a risky move that pays off in full. It’s fresh, fierce, original, and fully committed to redefining what a Predator story can be. For fans seeking adrenaline, invention, and a new chapter in sci-fi action mythology, Badlands hits the mark, and then some.

Pedro Pascal leads the charge as Reed Richards aka Mister Fantastic, bringing brains and bravery in equal measure. Vanessa Kirby turns heads as the strong and stylish Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman. Ebon Moss-Bachrach brings serious heart and grit to Ben Grimm, better known as The Thing, while Joseph Quinn is pure heat as the swaggering Johnny Storm, the Human Torch.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is more than just another Marvel movie — it’s a fresh and bold reimagining of these iconic characters set in a jaw-dropping retro world, packed with psychedelic visuals, intergalactic threats, and plenty of heart. This time, the Fab Four face their most monumental challenge yet — a planet-devouring space god named Galactus (played by the always menacing Ralph Ineson) and his cryptic, chrome-plated herald, the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner in a bold new take).

Get ready to climb back in the ring and go twelve rounds for the title because Michael B. Jordan takes his biggest step up, performing double duty as actor and director, and Creed III packs one hell of a punch.

World heavyweight boxing champion Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) comes face-to-face with the harshness of his past in the form of a vicious new contender, Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors).

In 2015 the Rocky franchise was resurrected and taken into an exciting new direction with Creed, an all-new sports drama that sought to tell the story of Adonis Creed, the illegitimate son of Rocky Balboa’s former opponent turned best friend Apollo Creed and his rise as a professional fighter. In the years since we’ve seen Creed faced down his past and rise to the occasion as a champion. Now Michael B. Jordan is ready to take the Creed narrative to the next level, and he jumps behind the camera to direct this latest instalment that finds Adonis having to face the shadows of his past in a bout that will push him to the limit.

Michael B. Jordan approaches Creed III with a one-two combination as both star and director, and in watching this film, you feel his command of the character and intuitiveness that be brings to the story. It’s a big task for such a young performer to handle a blockbuster of this scale, but it becomes clear to audience that has grown up on film sets, Jordan has been taking notes, and this is his shot to show what he’s got. Where Creed and Creed II dealt with issues of legacy and the ramifications of what it meant to be the son of a champion, in Creed III we find Adonis Creed coming face-to-face with the violence of the past he thought he had run away from. And it’s a heavy hit for the character to take.

Jordan’s direction offers a new frame of perspective for the film to follow in. We see a different side to the character of Adonis Creed as he steps away from the fight world and instead focus on his duty as a husband and father. But no warrior ever truly leaves the edge behind, and Jordan’s Creed has to find his inner savage as he steps back into the ring. With a character and story that’s so personal to him, Jordan commits himself to the presentation of this picture and works to craft a story that has his own stamp of approval.

Facing down Jordan’s Adonis Creed is man of the moment Jonathan Majors as Damian ‘Dame’ Anderson, the dark shadow of Adonis’s past. And Majors is a literal beast in the role. Inspired by the presence of Mike Tyson, Majors’ Anderson was a once promising protege who lost out on his chance at the title and faced the inside of a jail cell for close to twenty years. He’s a broken, angry and brutal fighter who’ll do anything to get a shot at the title and quickly moves from friend to adversary in the narrative. Absolutely shredded and giving off a threatening vibe, Majors again proves why he’s one of the most in-demand talents working today. He holds the attention of his audience with his performance as Dame, and damn can he hit hard.

While boxing movies are a key part of the sports genre, Jordan changes it up with the fight choreography this time with emotion and theme having their part to play inside the fight. Channeling the idea of Adonis and Damian in the roles of warring brothers Abel and Caine, Jordan makes the fights of Creed III incredibly personal and packed together with vehemence. The bouts are rough, physical and violent, with plenty of pain thrown in for good measure. They’re packed full of hyper-realism, and in IMAX you feel the power of the punches. It’s incredibly stylistic on behalf of Jordan and takes influence from his love for anime in the presentation of the combat. Added in is a kick-ass soundtrack, and audiences will find plenty to groove about with Creed III.

Creed III packs a punch and gives Michael B. Jordan the chance to show that he’s got some moves behind the camera. With a full-on showdown and two actors who are ready to get in a brawl, this is a film that will keep audiences entertained.

Watch the brand new trailer for House of Gucci NOW:

Here’s the official synopsis:

House of Gucci is inspired by the shocking true story of the family empire behind the Italian fashion house of Gucci. Spanning three decades of love, betrayal, decadence, revenge, and ultimately murder, we see what a name means, what it’s worth, and how far a family will go for control.

Noted visual genius Sir Ridley Scott brings his talented eye to the infamous story of Patrizia Reggiani and her involvement with the Gucci family in a sordid tale of wealth, opulence, excess and murder in House of Gucci and this film looks like an absolute whirlwind cinematic experience.

Set to the burning funk of Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This’, Scott focuses his camera in on Academy Award winner Lady Gaga who steps into the role of Patrizia Reggiani, an eccentric and calculating young woman who married into the Gucci empire via her husband Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver), and would do whatever was necessary to reach the top! Gaga gives Reggiani a cat-like elegance and cunning, and she completely owns the screen and thoroughly enchants the audience’s attention with her performance.

Driver also provides a key supporting role in the film as Patrizia’s husband, Maurizio Gucci, the heir to the Gucci fortune who finds a lavish new sense of power with his wife by his side. But also comes to see that there can only be one emperor sitting atop the Gucci empire and this brings him into direct contact with Gucci patriarch Aldo Gucci, who is played by Academy Award winner Al Pacino.

Scott has crafted a beautiful, elegant and lavish picture that pulls together the glamour and fashion of the 1970s and 1990s with effortless style. And fashionistas are going to be in awe and in love with the visuals that Scott brings to the screen with this picture.

Get ready to experience this glamourous and infamous story when House of Gucci arrives in cinemas on December 26.

New Zealand film is on a roll right now, and over the past 18 months audiences have been delivered some incredible pieces of cinema that have set both our minds and hearts on fire. Now audiences can prepare to meet the unstoppable character of Bunny King in The Justice Of Bunny King and this is a film that is certain to touch your heart.

Bunny King is a mother of two, a rough cut diamond with a sketchy past. While battling the system to reunite with her children, a confrontation leads her to take her niece Tonyah under her wing. With the world against her and Tonyah, Bunny’s battle has just begun.

Directed by Gaysorn Thavat with a screenplay by Sophie Henderson, The Justice Of Bunny King is a poignant and intriguing character study of a woman who has slipped through the cracks and who has been let down by society. She’s a character and a person that contemporary society refuses to see, and now her story is told for all. Essie Davis’s Bunny King is not a true to life character, but she is representative of many New Zealanders who have fallen by the wayside and who have been left at tremendous odds as to how to pull themselves back up. Together Thavat, Henderson and their team tell a strong character driven narrative of one woman’s desperate desire to reunite with her children and the results are spellbinding.

Stepping up to take on the role of Bunny King is Australian actress Essie Davis and she proves again why she is one of the best actresses working today. Best known as the delightful Miss Fisher, Davis has also stunned in recent works including The True History of the Kelly Gang and Babyteeth, and her role as Bunny King is another stellar dramatic performance that you can’t look away from. Davis makes Bunny real. This is a woman right from the start who has the world up against her, and she’s very much in a dark, seemingly bottomless pit that she cannot escape from. Her life has not been a nice one, but even with so much hardship around her she’s still a rather happy-go-lucky character and who can see the brighter side of life.

If there’s an anchor to Bunny’s character it’s her love for her children, and a desperate desire to be with them, and specifically to celebrate her youngest daughter’s birthday. Davis commitment to Bunny is absolute and she creates a fully rendered, 360 portrait of a character who can go from smiley and happy-go-lucky to angry and aggressive in an instant. Bunny is a complicated character and Davis hides nothing back in her performance and you see a woman who is struggling the whole way through. Davis’ performance is sure to pull on your heartstrings and she definitely causes a reaction to you as an audience member, and you’re fundamentally aware that this is an actress at the top of her game.

Joining Davis in The Justice of Bunny King is rising Kiwi sensation Thomasin McKenzie as Bunny’s wayward niece Tonyah and it’s a pairing that just works. In the character of Tonyah we see a portrait of what a younger Bunny may have been like, and as she deals with her own trials of neglect and abuse and the dangers that come with it, Bunny draws Tonyah in and desires to help her escape a traumatic home life. McKenzie is excellent in her performance, and it’s once again a very raw portrayal from a young actress who is causing audiences to sit up and take notice.

As a movie-going experience, your emotions are pulled in every direction with The Justice of Bunny King. This film is very much a heavy drama, and it tells an important and socially charged story, but Thavat is aware of this and she also injects the film with plenty of light-comedy and hysterical moments to not only break up the drama of the film but to showcase a portrait of this character. While Bunny does face many obstacles, at all times you feel that she is most definitely an optimist who sees the world as ‘the glass half full’, and this use of comedy and the unexpected is very useful in bringing this to life.

The Justice of Bunny King is a film that is a dramatic, funny and thoughtful portrait of the people we often don’t see. It’s a film that makes you think and which is delivered to the big screen with enormous empathy. It’s also a film that will truly touch your heart and audiences who are fortunate enough to witness it will be very moved by the story it tells.

Mental illness, Morrissey and Guinea Pigs are the core subject matter of this intriguing and extremely heartfelt story of The More You Ignore Me, which follows a young girl’s coming of age as she has to grapple with the depths of families troubles and tries to find a path for herself amongst all of it.

Based on Jo Brand’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name, The More You Ignore Me is a warm, comedy-drama focusing on the life of an unconventional family in 1980s rural England. The film focuses on Gina, a young mother, whose efforts to be a loving mother and wife are undermined by her declining mental health. Over the years, as she grows up, her daughter Alice struggles to relate to her heavily medicated mum and causes chaos when she comes up with a plan to reconnect with her, which divides the family forever and leads to a moving climax. Set to the songs of The Smiths, The More You Ignore Me provides a sometimes stark, yet comical insight into life within this quirky household, whilst addressing mental health issues and their impact on the family.

Taking its name from the classic Smiths song, The More You Ignore Me is the feature debut of British director Keith English, and here this filmmaker examines a family undergoing considerable stresses in a very lively and heartfelt story. Set in Sheffield in the late 1970s to mid-1980s, England’s focus is on that of Alice (Ella Hunt), a young woman who is having to grow up amidst the mania of her mother Gina’s (Sheridan Smith) considerable mental illness, and having to navigate the hardships that it places on her life. Part comedy, part drama, The More You Ignore Me is a very original tale and audiences sure get taken on an emotional ride with this one. Whether its tragedy or comedy, you’ll find all of it in English’s film, and his handling of this subject matter makes for a very intriguing piece of cinema.

Within this film, praise must be levelled on actress Ella Hunt, whom as our protagonist Alice has to show a wide range of emotions throughout this narrative as she grows up in a less than stable environment. There’s a deep authenticity to Hunt’s portrayal of Alice and you completely buy into her lived experience as Alice and the difficulties that she has to overcome. Her escape from her often depressing home life is the music of The Smiths and a growing infatuation with lead singer Morrissey. Fans of the cult British band will be in sync with Alice’s love for The Smiths, and Hunt brings an amazing sense of honesty to the role of Alice, and you completely buy into her desire to escape. But in the end, it’s only through accepting her mother that she can truly be set free and this is where the film finds its heart-warming soul.

Along with its exploration of a frayed and often complicated portrait of a very eccentric nuclear family, The More You Ignore Me also works to present an incredibly realistic portrayal of mental health and the sometimes harsh realities that come from having to contend with it. English, along with his cast, don’t hold back in portraying the struggles that severe mental illness can cause people and it’s often heart-breaking to see Gina’s delusions coming to the forefront and the harm they do to her and others around them. Part of the message of The More You Ignore Me is built around an understanding of mental illness, and how those who come to know it have to learn to live with it and manage it. There are no stigmas placed upon it here in the film, and English and his cast and crew do their best to represent the mentally ill and those around them in the most normal light possible.

From start to finish, The More You Ignore Me is an incredibly rich and eccentric film that delivers plenty of heart. It can at times be a hard watch due to its subject matter, but its message of acceptance and striving to live the best life you can is certainly endearing and because of this it’s an incredibly worthwhile watch.

When it comes to dramatic effect, Academy Award winner Russell Crowe knows how to drive things home, and in his latest film, the high-stakes thriller Unhinged, he unleashes the monster and lets loose with an utterly terrifying performance.

Watch the intense and shocking new trailer below:

Here’s the official synopsis:

A single mother (Caren Pistorius) begins to be stalked and tormented by a stranger (Russell Crowe) following a road rage confrontation at a red light.

Directed by Derrick Borte, Unhinged takes the concept of road rage and dials it up to 100 as a single isolated incident becomes an increasingly dangerous game of cat and mouse as single mother Rachel (Pistorius) finds herself targeted by a dangerous and aggressive stalker (Crowe) who wants to take out his raw rage upon her.

Crowe has completely transformed himself for the role of The Man, and his ordinary guy character becomes a seemingly unstoppable aggressor as he looks to take out all of his life’s frustrations on Rachel and her family over this single slight. It’s a terrifying performance on behalf of Crowe and he will seriously have you on edge with this character.

Crowe is joined by fellow Kiwi Caren Pistorius as Rachel, a single mother who herself is going through hard times, only to find herself under the threat of this unstoppable aggressor. It’s a great role for the young actress and she looks to hold her own against Crowe.

This trailer will seriously have you on edge, and Borte’s direction promises a film that will have you gripping the corners of your seat, while your heart rate skyrockets!

In an interesting update, Unhinged has also been moved forward from its original release date of September 4, 2020 to July 1, 2020, and is being used to test the waters for cinemas and this new cinematic experience that we now find ourselves in with COVID-19. It’ll be interesting to see how it develops from here and whether Unhinged will make it’s new July release date, but if it does come together we could have a template for future releases to follow this year.

Unhinged will arrive in cinemas on July 1.
