Directed by David Ayer, Heart of the Beast stars Pitt as retired Special Forces Staff Sergeant James Belmont, who finds himself stranded in the Alaskan wilderness alongside Odin, his retired combat dog, following a devastating plane crash.

And if our recent review is anything to go by, audiences aren’t simply turning up for the action.

At the centre of Heart of the Beast is the deeply affecting relationship between Belmont and Odin, with the film combining survival-thriller intensity with a surprisingly tender exploration of loyalty, trauma and the unbreakable bond between a soldier and his best friend.

That emotional connection appears to be resonating strongly with Kiwi audiences, with Heart of the Beast playing across everything from major multiplexes and boutique cinemas to smaller community theatres throughout the country.

Brad Pitt’s Quiet Strength

Brad Pitt brings an enormous amount of gravitas to James Belmont.

Rather than playing Belmont as an invincible action hero, Pitt gives him the weary presence of a soldier who has already seen too much. His experience is written into every movement, every calculation and every decision.

When the wilderness begins tearing them apart, Belmont’s military training kicks in. Survival becomes the mission. Every step carries a cost. Every injury matters. Every decision could be the difference between getting home and never seeing civilisation again.

Pitt sells that physical and emotional exhaustion beautifully, giving Belmont a rugged determination that feels grounded rather than exaggerated. There is no easy victory here. Survival has to be earned.

Odin’s Tale

But Heart of the Beast doesn’t belong solely to James Belmont. This is Odin’s story too.

The film places tremendous emphasis on the relationship between Belmont and his combat companion, and it is here that Heart of the Beast finds its emotional core.

Played by Uber, Odin is far more than a conventional cinematic dog. He is Belmont’s partner, protector and closest friend — a fellow operator who has experienced the horrors of war alongside him. That bond is what gives the film its emotional punch.

Idris Pearce is equally well balanced with a chip on both shoulders, and enters into a ruthless competitiveness with Hayes, and to put it likely, these two don’t get along. But it’s clear that this golden boy prodigy might not know everything, and after he’s taken for a ride by Hayes, the two will have to square up their differences if they are to make it to the podium.

Bringing the balance to the film, and a whole heap of romance to the picture, is APXGP’s Team Principal Kate (Kerry Condon), who sees through the macho dance between Hayes and Pearce and who is ready to do everything she needs to in order to straighten them both out. There’s also a burning romance that flutters between her and Pitt Hayes, and it’s getting downright scintillating and all kinds of sexy in F1!

Brad Pitt looks ultra cool as the film’s central character, Sonny Hayes, a one-time Formula 1 great and full-on burnout who gets a shot at redemption and a chance to prove himself on the track, and it’s full-on war from there.

This first-look footage places audiences right in action. Filmmaker Joseph Kosinski mounted 15 separate cameras to the body of the film’s cars, which were built in partnership with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team. The cars were built off the chassis of a Formula 2 car and then designed to look like F1 cars. This has allowed the driving to take place on track, with the rig capturing everything, and both Brad Pitt and Damsen Idris were trained for three months to drive in both Formula 3 and Formula 2 before hitting the track.

Alongside the authenticity of the world on the track, F1 also has a stacked cast featuring the likes of Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies and Academy Award winner Javier Bardem, who portrays the owner of the Apex Grand Prix team (APXGP). With such talent both in front of and behind the camera, you know this will be an incredible watch. Kosinski also finds his stride between the action on the track and the film’s heavy drama; plenty of emotion is present in this picture.

The film has been made in collaboration with Formula 1, specifically with the full support of Seven-Time World Champion Lewis Hamilton (who also serves as a producer on the project), Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team Principal Toto Wolff, and the larger Formula 1 organisation, which has given them unique access to the paddock and the track. The trailer even showcases cameo appearances from the likes of Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz Jr., Sergio Pérez, and, in a scene-stealing moment, Guenther Steiner!

The first-look teaser trailer arrived during the 2024 British Grand Prix, which saw Hamilton win for the ninth time and had Pitt film additional scenes earlier in the week.

This teaser is only a first look at what is to come, but it looks damn impressive, and we think audiences will be in for a hell of a rush when F1 arrives in cinemas on June 25, 2025.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), a Formula One driver who raced in the 1990s, has a horrible crash, forcing him to retire from Formula One and start racing in other disciplines. A Formula One team owner and friend contacts Hayes and asks him to come out of retirement to mentor rookie prodigy Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) on the Apex Grand Prix team (APXGP).

F1 is shaping up to be one of 2025’s biggest blockbusters. With its focus on on-track action and the camera again capturing the fury that occurs right in the moment, this is going to be a film you won’t want to miss out on.

The film also has an incredible cast assembled for it, including the likes Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies and Javier Bardem, who will be joining Brad Pitt and Damson Idris and it has been made with the full commitment and blessing of Formula One, with eight time World Champion Lewis Hamilton serving as a producer on the film. Filming also took place at the 2023 British Grand Prix, and F1 will include appearances by the likes of drivers, including Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz Jr., George Russell, Charles Leclerc, Pierre Gasly, Sergio Pérez and Fernando Alonso, alongside other current Formula One Racers.
