That’s right, you’re reading that headline correctly, The Expendables: A Christmas Story is a go and star Jason Statham is ready to bring the heat here with an all-new spin off film from the much beloved Expendables franchise, and it’s set to focus in on the wise-cracking, knife throwing, ex-SAS badass Lee Christmas!
MovieWeb confirmed that work is now under way for this new spin-off film centered on Jason Statham’s character and while plot details are sparse at the moment, it is confirmed that Sylvester Stallone will return in the role as Expendables leader and Christmas’ best friend Barney Ross and that Arnold Schwarzenegger is also likely to return as Trench Mauser. Tony Jaa is also rumored for an appearance and it’s likely that we might also get to see the return of Charisma Carpenter as Lee’s fiancee Lacy.
I’d be well keen on seeing The Expendables franchise press forward and the idea of a Lee Christmas spin-off has me sold. Statham continues to prove that he’s an incredibly prolific performer and he regularly switches it up, and it’d be fun to see him go it alone here.
The screenplay for The Expendables: A Christmas Story was penned by writer Max Adams, while directors Duncan Jones (Warcraft, Mute) and D.J. Caruso (xXx: The Return of Xander Cage) are being courted to direct. I’d be thrilled to see Jones take on the project and I reckon it’d be fun to see him take on such a loud and out there action project.
Work is still underway on both The Expendables: A Christmas Story and the impending The Expendables 4, and I can’t wait to hear more about these new projects.
