Fans have been left salivating thanks to the release of some first look imagery from the upcoming fantasy anime epic, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and this is going to be a release that is going to take audiences by surprise.

Thanks to a recent press event at the Annecy Animation Festival, these new images have been released. They convey the heroine of the film’s story, Hèra (Gaia Wise), along with other central characters who have a position within the history and lineage of the land of Rohan, including Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox), Haleth (Benjamin Wainwright), and Hama (Yazdan Qafouri).

In addition to the new casting news, which includes the huge boon of seeing celebrated actor Brian Cox (Succession, Troy, Manhunter) as King Helm Hammerhand, the legendary ruler of the Horse Lords of Rohan who would give his name to the fortress of Helm’s Deep, Lord of the Rings star Miranda Otto, who portrayed the Rohirrin noblewoman and shieldmaiden Éowyn, will narrate the story.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Set 183 years before the events of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, The War of the Rohirrim tells the story of Helm Hammerhand, a legendary king of Rohan, and his family as they defend their kingdom against an army of Dunlendings.

One of the most interesting things about this new look imagery is how it has firmly set the style and direction of the film in the anime direction. And we’re loving what we’re getting here. Celebrated anime director Kenji Kamiyama is the man at the helm of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and he’s bringing his definite anime style and mixing it together with the work of Weta Workshop to create something that is radically different, but that absolutely hits audiences the right way. The new footage that was displayed impressed many people, including Andy Serkis, who stated, “The fans are going to go nuts for this.”

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is shaping up to be an utterly epic animated feature that will excite audiences when it arrives in cinemas on December 13, 2024.
