The epic high fantasy of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’ arrives in new trailer
For many fans, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings occupies a very special place in their hearts. In what will be a special release, Sir Peter Jackson, working in unison with renowned anime filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama, is working to bring a new artistic interpretation to Tolkien’s Middle Earth in The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. And this first trailer is utterly glorious.

Here’s the official synopsis:
Set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim tells the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan. A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg— a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Héra, the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.
This new trailer does a terrific job of bringing together the worlds of Sir Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy with a fresh chapter of Tolkien’s Middle Earth lore, and it fully showcases an incredible level of storytelling and art on behalf of Kenji Kamiyama’s total vision for this project.
We were thoroughly spellbound by the first-look art pieces that arrived online back in June, and seeing this trailer come to life is a breathtaking experience. Not only is the anime dynamic and kinetic in its delivery, but it is directly shaped by character and story, and it’s fantastic to see a new interpretation of Tolkien as seen through the anime lens.
The trailer is also an exciting watch as it gives audiences a fresh look into The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’s central protagonist, Hèra, portrayed by Gaia Wise. In describing her character in more detail, Wise said there was a close association between Hèra and the classic anime character Nausicaä from Hayao Miyazaki’s classic manga and anime Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and that she also drew inspiration from the portrayals of Eowyn and Arwen as portrayed by Miranda Otto and Liv Tyler. She describes Hèra as a tomboy-ish character and says that she brings a rebellious and complicated spirit to the narrative, which will keep audiences on guard the whole way through.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a grand event that will be a must watch experience for long time fans of Tolkien’s work, and with its fresh approach to this grand story, I have a feeling we’re in for a thoroughly remarkable piece of storytelling when it arrives in cinemas on December 11.
